Southern California native Gillian Howard joins the Alaska Anchorage volleyball staff in 2017 for her first season as the program’s student assistant coach.
A former AVCA honorable mention All-American as a middle blocker at Div. I University of the Pacific, Howard comes to UAA after playing professionally in Belgium during the 2015 season and coaching with the Coast 18 Volleyball Club in California in 2016.
In four collegiate seasons at UOP (2011-14), she racked up 796 kills and 484 total blocks, leading the team in blocking her final three campaigns and finishing among the program’s career top 10 in attack percentage and all blocking categories. As a senior in 2014, Howard helped UOP to its best season in 10 years with a 24-7 record, and led the West Coast Conference in attack percentage at .394.
In addition to First Team All-WCC honors as a senior, she was honorable mention All-WCC as a junior, when her 1.43 blocks per set ranked 16th nationally.
As a prep star at La Jolla Country Day in her hometown of La Jolla, Calif., Howard helped her school to a national top-10 ranking as a senior, and a 39-1 record and California state title as a junior. On the club level, she played for the prestigious Coast 18 Volleyball Club, which won the bronze at the 2011 USA Junior National Championships.
Howard earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from UOP in 2015 and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in clinical psychology at UAA.
