ANCHORAGE – Chrisalyn Johnson tied her career high with 22 kills but 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage could not fend off two late surges by 11th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday as the Coyotes earned a 25-20, 20-25, 17-25, 25-23, 15-13 win in the final match of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase, presented by Hilton Garden Inn, at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Johnson also had 15 digs and the host Seawolves (4-4) got 15 kills and 11 digs from fellow junior outside hitter Leah Swiss as the hosts finished the Showcase with a 2-2 record.

The Coyotes (4-4) were led by 16 kills from outside hitter Moira Murphy and 19 digs by libero Leilia To’omalatai as they overcame deficits of 22-16 and 23-20 to win the fourth set. The defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champions finished the Showcase with a 1-3 mark.

UAA led throughout much of the fifth set and took a 13-12 lead when Anais Vargas and Vanessa Hayes stuffed an attack by Murphy. But a CSUSB timeout would swing the momentum as the visitors tied it on a kill by Kaili Scott and won it with two straight spikes by Murphy.

The Seawolves lost despite outhitting the Coyotes, .272 to .242 and outdigging them 81-67. Johnson posted a .362 attack percentage and added two aces as she equaled the 22 kills she had in last year’s home match against Western Washington.

Senior libero Keala Kaio-Perez had career highs of 23 digs and seven assists in the loss, while setters Madison Fisher and Casey Davenport combined for 46 assists and four aces.

The match was UAA’s fifth 5-setter in eight matches thus far this season.

The Seawolves begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday when they fly north to face Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
