ANCHORAGE – Dominic Waters scored 22 points and dished six assists Saturday as his Portland State squad used a dominating first-half performance to earn third place in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout with an 81-67 win over Seattle at Sullivan Arena.

The Vikings (5-1) also got 15 points and 12 rebounds from center Jamie Jones, plus 16 points and seven boards from forward Phil Nelson.

Seattle (4-3) was led by 14 points from guard Chris Gweth, while guard Drew Harris had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for the first-year Division I program.

Portland State – the defending Big Sky Conference champion – took an early 15-5 lead on a three-pointer by Waters and slowly stretched to a 40-21 halftime advantage. The Vikings outshot the Redhawks 53 percent (17-32) to 35 percent (9-26) in the opening 20 minutes while forcing them into a dreadful 2-to-14 assist-turnover ratio.

SU would draw no closer than 11 points in the second half as they finished fifth in their inaugural Shootout appearance.

The Redhawks and Vikings will meet again Dec. 6 at the Stott Center in Portland, Ore.
