ANCHORAGE - Boosted by a perfect performance from goaltender Scott Greenham, defending champion Alaska Fairbanks skated to a 2-0 victory over 3rd-ranked Michigan on Friday to open the 2009 Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena.
The Nanooks (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead when freshman winger Chad Gehon took a feed from center Justin Filzen directly in front of the net and scored midway through the second period.
UAF then got insurance against its Central Collegiate Hockey Association rival with an unassisted tally from sophomore defenseman Joe Sova at the 3:52 mark of the third period.
Greenham, a sophomore from Addison, Ontario, made 23 saves to earn Kendall Player of the Game honors.
Michigan (0-1-0) got 11 saves from junior goalie Bryan Hogan and five shots on goal by senior defenseman Scott Kampfer as the 2000 Kendall champs lost for the first time in three games in Anchorage. UAF faces Mercyhurst in Game 3 of the Classic, and Michigan faces host Alaska Anchorage in the finale Saturday night.
