GRAND FORKS, N.D. – Nicolas Erb-Ekholm and Nils Rygaard each scored for Alaska Anchorage in a 5-2 loss at No. 17 North Dakota Friday.

“After 20 minutes or so playing on our heals, I thought we were able to respond and get back to the way we are capable of playing the second half of the game,” said head coach Matt Curley. “Obviously a lot to work on, but we were able to generate some positives for ourselves heading into tomorrow night.”

Kris Carlson stopped a UND penalty shot early in the first but North Dakota scored 13 seconds later when Ludvig Hoff scored on a diving tip in.

The Fighting Hawks opened the scoring in the second period with the first of two power-play goals at 4:36.

Jackson Keane pushed the UND lead to 3-0 when he scored five hole at 5:56.

The Seawolves got on the board with a power-play goal at 9:23. Tanner Schachle’s shot trickled behind Peter Thome and then was pushed over the line by Erb-Ekholm. Jonah Renouf added an assist on the play.

UND’s Rhett Gardner scored the final goal of the second period on the powerplay at 11:50.

The third period opened with a goal by Nils Rygaard at 9:47 thanks to assists by Jeremiah Luedtke and Drayson Pears.

Casey Johnson scored the final goal of the game for UND at 12:13.

Shots ended in favor of North Dakota 40-22. UAA was 1-for-4 on the powerplay and UND was 2-for-3.

Carlson finished with 34 saves for UAA, and Thome made 20 saves for UND.

Alaska Anchorage (1-9-1) and North Dakota (6-5-1) will close out the series Saturday.
