SAN JOSE, Calif. – Senior Kaylin Mancari and junior Sophia Hyderally helped the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to the second-best floor exercise score in program history as the Seawolves finished third of four teams in Friday night’s quad meet at The Event Center.
The Seawolves scored 191.425 points as they barely missed earning their first win in 13 all-time meetings against the host Spartans, who edged them for second place overall with 191.700. Air Force took the team title with 193.775, while Seattle Pacific finished fourth with 189.325 in the battle of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation programs.
“We are performing with a ton of confidence on floor right now, and that really shone through tonight,” said UAA head coach Tanya Ho, whose squad came just shy of the program-record 49.075 floor score from the 2004 MPSF Championships. “This was a solid effort tonight on floor and beam, but I know we have a higher ceiling on bars and vault, and we’re excited to see how high we can score when we maximize our potential on those events.”
The floor exercise came next as the Seawolves got career-high efforts from five of their six competitors, plus a 9.8 from Fox. Hyderally and Mancari equaled the 17th-best floor score in program history with 9.85s to tie for podium honors in third place, while juniors Mackenzie Miller and Kennedy Green scored 9.775 and 9.7, respectively. Freshman Rachel Decious also earned a personal best with a 9.65.
The Seawolves held down second place for much of the final two rotations, getting a career-best 9.725 from Fox and a 9.6 from Green on the vault.
UAA finished on bars with a 46.975 total. Green led the way with a 9.5, while Miller and Hyderally each scored 9.475. San Jose State surpassed UAA for second place on the Spartans’ final floor routine when Taylor Chan performed a winning 9.9 routine.
Fox placed third of five all-arounders with a 38.600 total.
The Seawolves compete against their other two MPSF rival Sunday at 1 p.m. when they finish their road trip with against UC Davis and Sacramento State at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. Check the UAA gymnastics schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for direct video and scores links.
