Alaska Anchorage will head to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in the UNLV Cross Country Invitational Sept. 22. The men’s eight-kilometer race will begin at 7:15 am with the women’s race covering five-kilometers will begin at 8 am. The competition will feature the host UNLV, along with teams from Fresno State, UC Riverside and Dixie State.
The University of Alaska Anchorage enjoyed great success at its season-opening competition in Anchorage on Sept. 8th. UAA swept both the team and individual titles in a dual meet against in-state rival UAF.
Emma Chelimo was the first collegiate finisher (21:27) and second overall behind Rosie Brennan (20:47) who is a member of the US Nordic Ski Team. Emma Chelimo was named the GNAC Runner of the Week.
Wesley Kirui, a Div. I transfer from Hampton, won the men’s race in a time of 22:06.
Both the men’s and women’s teams posted perfect scores of 15 points against Fairbanks.
A pair of freshmen opened their collegiate careers with strong finishes in the season opener. Jacob Moos was the final scorer for the Seawolves placing fifth (23:22) with Faisal Ibrahim finishing eighth (23:41).
Sophomore transfer Nancy Jeptoo impressed in her first race in a Seawolf jersey. The transfer from Alderson Broaddus finished second among collegians and fourth overall in a time of 22:01.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are ranked in the latest USTFCCCA National Polls. The men’s squad is ranked 21st for the second week in a row, while the women moved up one spot to No. 7.
Both Seawolf squads are ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Regional Polls. The women are ranked second behind Chico State while GNAC foe Simon Fraser is third. The men are ranked fourth in the West Region behind Chico State, Western Oregon and Simon Fraser.
UAA will take nearly a month off from competition before returning to action at the Western Washington Invite on Oct. 20.
