HILO, Hawaii – Sophomore forward Cameron Fernandez scored 13 points to pace another balanced effort from the 14th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team in a 71-60 victory over Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
The Seawolves (9-1) also got 11 points and eight rebounds from sophomore wing Sala Langi and 10 points, five assists and three steals from senior guard Kian McNair in their final non-conference game of the regular season.
The Vulcans (4-4) were led by game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds from forward Alli Navarette, but the hosts trailed throughout as they fell to 0-8 all-time against UAA.
“We came out with better focus tonight but we still need to improve on keeping our intensity throughout the entire game,” said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team finished the non-conference season with a 7-1 mark. “It was a good team effort overall, with everyone in the lineup stepping up to make a contribution, especially with so much foul trouble.”
UAA forged a 19-15 lead after one quarter and took a 28-17 edge on a three-pointer from Fernandez – a Maui native – with 6:30 left in the second quarter. The Vulcans used a 15-6 advantage from the free throw line to stay within 35-29 at the break, but the Seawolves took control out of the locker room with an 8-0 run, capped by a putback tip-in from junior Safiyyah Yasin at the 8:19 mark.
Yasin – who finished with eight points – scored again on a drive with 8:39 left in the game to give UAA its largest lead at 64-42.
Seven Seawolves scored at least six points, including freshman guard Jahnna Hajdukovich as the Dimond High product produced career-highs of 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Seawolves have next week off before returning to play Jan. 3 when they host Simon Fraser (5-4, 1-1 GNAC) in the resumption of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Tip-off is 5:15 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
