INDIANAPOLIS – Riding a 16-game winning streak, the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team premiered at No. 3 in Wednesday’s first official NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, which go toward determining NCAA Tournament qualification.

The nationally 9th-ranked Seawolves (23-1) are joined in the regional rankings by Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-leader and nationally 7th-ranked Northwest Nazarene (21-1) at No. 2, while fellow GNAC club Simon Fraser (16-7) is No. 6.

Unbeaten and nationally 2nd-ranked UC San Diego (22-0) holds down the top spot and has the inside track to host the West Regional Championships, Mar. 15-18. Azusa Pacific (20-4) is No. 4 in the first poll, followed by Cal Poly Pomona (20-4), Simon Fraser, Humboldt State (15-6) and Dominican (19-4). Cal State San Marcos (13-9) and UAA non-conference opponent Hawaii Pacific (17-7) sit on the outside of the playoff bubble at Nos. 9 and 10.

The rankings take into account only Div. II games played through Feb. 17.

The regional rankings will be released again Feb. 27 and Mar. 6, leading to the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field Mar. 10. The top five ‘at-large’ teams – along with the winners of the GNAC, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pac West Conference tournaments – will make the NCAAs, with the top seed generally earning the right to host.

UAA has four regular-season games remaining – including a Feb. 28 showdown with Northwest Nazarene in Anchorage – prior to the GNAC Tournament. The Seawolves visit Seattle Pacific on Thursday (6:30 pm AST) and Saint Martin’s on Saturday (4:15 pm AST) to close the road portion of their regular-season schedule this week.

All GNAC games – including the GNAC Tournament (Mar. 7-9 in Bellingham, Wash.) – can be seen live online at
