SCOUTING THE COUGARS: Pacific West Conference regular-season champion Azusa Pacific recovered from a 3-3 start to win 24 of its last 26 outings, suffering its only losses in that span against league rival Hawaii Pacific ... the Cougars, from Azusa, Calif., are led by Savanna Hanson (15.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 1.0 bpg, .322 3FG, .689 FT) and Laura Pranger (11.8 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 3.3 bpg, .462 FG, .619 FT).

 

SERIES HISTORY: This will mark the first meeting between the Seawolves and Cougars since APU transitioned from NAIA membership to NCAA Div. II early this decade.

 

SEAWOLF NCAA HISTORY: The Seawolves are making their 18th overall NCAA Tournament trip (’86, ’88, ’89, ’92, ’94, ’00, ’07, ’08, ’09, ’10, ’11, ‘12, ’14, ’15, ‘16, ‘17, ’18, ’19) ... UAA stands 26-17 all-time in NCAA games after beating Hawaii Pacific and Northwest Nazarene this weekend … UAA is 20-7 in West Region play since 2007, suffering four of those losses to No. 1 seeds (and eventual regional champions) on their home courts (Cal Poly Pomona, ’11 & ’14; Seattle Pacific, ’10; UCSD, ’07) … the Seawolves have won four regional titles (2008, 2009, 2012, 2016) ... UAA made its first appearance in the NCAA Div. II national title game in 2016 after bowing out in the national semifinals in 2008 and 2009 ... UAA improved to 12-6 in NCAA openers and earned its fourth straight first-round win with its 76-69 victory over HPU ... the Seawolves improved 7-8 all-time in the Round of 32 with Saturday’s 69-67 win over NNU ... UAA is 4-2 in the Sweet 16 (regional finals) after its 71-70 loss to MSU Billings in 2018.

 

GNAC TOURNEY RECAP: The Seawolves reached the title game of the ninth annual Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships last week, but suffered their first loss since Dec. 1 as they fell 70-64 to nationally 9th-ranked Northwest Nazarene on Saturday in Bellingham, Wash. ... in Friday’s semifinal against 4th-seeded Central Washington, the top-seeded Seawolves got 21 points (10-18 FG), 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 3 steals from Sr. C Hannah Wandersee to spark a 70-52 win ... Jr. PG Yazmeen Goo added 11 points (5-8 FG), 6 rebounds and 4 assists and Jr. G Safiyyah Yasin had 10 points as UAA beat Central for the 14th straight time ... in the title game, Sr. G Tara Thompson equaled her season high with 16 points (4-9 3FG) to lead UAA back from a 38-21 deficit, but the Nighthawks finished with an 11-2 run over the final 5 minutes to claim their first GNAC Tourney crown ... Wandersee had 13 points (6-9 FG) in the loss, while Goo tallied 12 points (3-6 FG, 6-10 FT), 2 assists and 2 steals.

 

WINNING WAYS: The Seawolves have won at least 30 games for the third time in four season, including their NCAA Div. II-record 38 victories in 2015-16 ... UAA is the first basketball program to win at least a share of five straight GNAC regular-season titles ... the 21-game win streak from Dec. 18-Mar. 8 was the 3rd-longest winning streak in program history ... UAA has recorded 25 wins for the fifth straight season and earned its 15th 20-win season in 42 years of program history ... at 154-14 (.918), the Seawolves have the best winning percentage and second-most victories in NCAA Div. II since 2014-15, dueling with Ashland (157-15, .913) for those honors ... UAA is a combined 99-8 – including 45-4 on the road – in GNAC regular-season and tournament games over the last five seasons (since Dec. 2014) ... the Seawovles have won 30 consecutive GNAC regular-season home contests, posting 10-0 marks the last three seasons ... UAA has gone a combined 182-16 (.919) in the last 12 seasons on its home courts, including 73-6 (.924) at the Alaska Airlines Center (since 2014-15) ... the Seawolves have won 49 of their last 50 regular-season games against Div. II non-conference opponents ... the Seawolves have earned the program’s 13th consecutive winning season and their 12th NCAA Tournament berth in 13 years ... the Seawolves have won five of the nine GNAC Tournament titles since the event started in 2011.

 

NIFTY NUMBERS: UAA leads the GNAC stats in eight categories – scoring defense (56.2 ppg), steals per game (14.6), assists per game (17.9), assist-turnover ratio (1.3), turnover margin (+8.9), turnovers forced per game (22.9), scoring margin (+19.1) and 3FG% defense (.288), while ranking second in scoring offense (75.3 ppg), offensive rebounding pct. (.360) and offensive rebounds per game (13.0) ... in the NCAA Div. II national stats, the Seawolves hold top-10 ranks in steals per game (2nd), turnover margin (5th), turnovers forced per game (7th), assists per game (8th), A/T ratio (9th) and scoring margin (9th), plus top-50 marks in scoring defense (20th), FG% (28th, .442), scoring offense (31st), fewest turnovers per game (41st, 14.0) and 3FG% defense (44th).

 

WONDERFUL WANDERSEE: The 2018-19 GNAC Player of the Year and a two-time unanimous First Team All-GNAC selection, Sr. C Hannah Wandersee continued to rack up honors throughout the regular season, including all-tournament at the Gator Invitational and Seawolf Hoops Classic, MVP of the DII Coast to Coast Classic, and three GNAC Player of the Week awards (Nov. 19-25, Jan. 7-13, Jan. 28-Feb. 3), and this week she added D2CCA First Team All-West Region accolades ... UAA’s leading scorer and rebounder, she is 3rd in scoring (14.8 ppg), 7th in blocks (1.0 bpg), 3rd in FT% (.880) and 14th in FG% (.486) in the GNAC stats ... with recent scoring totals of 21 against Central Washington in the GNAC semifinals and 22 against Hawaii Pacific in the NCAA First Round, the Kodiak product now has 13 career 20-plus efforts ... one of three players in program history with at least 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks, Wandersee has become UAA’s all-time leader in both victories (123) and games played (135), along with career top-20 marks in scoring (8th, 1,355), rebounds (11th, 597), blocks (4th, 121), blocks per game (7th, 0.9), FG made (6th, 548), FG% (8th, .512), FT% (3rd, .830) and FT made (t-12th, 230).

 

BEWARE OF T.N.T.: Whether it’s her sweet three-point stroke or her solid all-around game, Sr. G Tara (N.) Thompson has been one of the most effective contributors to UAA’s run of success, ranking No. 2 in program history with 121 victories and claiming Second Team All-GNAC honors in her final season ... one of two remaining active players from UAA’s 2016 NCAA Runner-Up squad, Thompson ranks 7th in the GNAC and 35th nationally in 3FG% (.396), along with other league ranks of 4th in 3FGs per game (2.3) and 1st in assist-turnover ratio (3.0) ... with a .397 career 3FG%, Thompson ranks 7th in UAA history and top 20 in GNAC history, while her 235 total 3FGs trail only former teammate Jenna Buchanan (239, 2012-16) on UAA’s all-time list.

 

GOO STUFF: An honorable mention All-GNAC selection for the second year in a row, Jr. PG Yazmeen Goo made her return to the lineup on Jan. 10 after missing 10 games with a hand injury ... since sheddding her protective cast 16 games ago, she has delivered 48 steals, 53 assists and averaged 10.0 ppg ... the Bay Area native has multiple steals in 20 of her 22 outings this year, ranking 2nd in the GNAC and top 20 nationally with 3.1 spg ... she also holds league ranks of 2nd in FG% (.564) and 13th in assists per game (3.2) ... on UAA’s career lists, Goo already ranks in the top 10 in assists (5th, 322), assists per game (9th, 3.9), steals (6th, 208) and steals per game (9th, 2.6), plus 14th in FTs made (227) and 17th in FG% (.476).

 

SENIOR SHOW STEALERS: After learning the system as transfers last year, Sr. G Kian McNair (Portland State) and Sr. G Sydni Stallworth (2-time 1st Team NJCAA All-American at Pima CC) have made major impacts in their final season ... a starter in 51 of 61 career games, McNair leads the GNAC and is 6th nationally with 3.3 steals per game, boosted by a record-tying 9-steal game against Simon Fraser, 8 steals against Saint Martin’s and 7 against Concordia and at SMU ... with multiple steals in 28 of 32 games, she is on pace to challenge both the UAA and GNAC single-season records for steals per game ... the Most Outstanding Player in November’s Seawolf Hoops Classic and an all-tourney pick at the DII Hoops Classic, McNair also holds GNAC ranks of 14th in assists per game (2.9) and assist-turnover ratio (1.5) ... meanwhile, Stallworth has provided a big lift both off the bench and in the starting lineup, scoring in double figures 16 times – including eight straight to end the regular season (14.6 ppg) – and dishing four-plus assists on 13 occasions, including both NCAA contests so far ... the Tucson, Ariz., native shot a blazing .561 (37 of 66) from three-point range to lead the GNAC in 20 conference games, and in the current overall GNAC overall stats she ranks 1st in 3FG% (.480), 2nd in A/T ratio (2.1, 25th nationally), 8th in steals (1.9), 12th in assists (3.2) and 15th in 3FGs per game (1.5) ... the honorable mention All-GNAC pick has committed only 14 turnovers in her last 12 outings (spanning 295 minutes), including three games against Northwest Nazarene’s full-court pressure defense.

 

’WOLF BITES: So. F/C Tennae Voliva has averaged 5.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game since stepping into the starting lineup 12 games ago, boosted by 16 points and 14 rebounds in the first two NCAA contests ... Voliva has accounted for at least five points in 15 games and at least four rebounds in 18 contests, tying her career high with 9 rebounds in the NCAA win over Hawaii Pacific ... the former East Anchorage HS star leads UAA in FG% at .509 (59 of 116) and is second on the team with 16 blocks ... the Seawolves have added another scoring threat with Jr. G Safiyyah Yasin, who redshirted in 2017-18 after transfering from Diablo Valley (Calif.) College ... prior to her breakout performances against Simon Fraser and Western Washington in early January, Yasin led UAA with 16 points in her debut against Holy Names, and she delivered a clutch 16 points to help fend off Hawaii Pacific in November ... along with double-figure scoring efforts in 11 games and multiple steals in 20 contests, Yasin ranks 5th in the GNAC with 2.1 steals per game ... So. F Sala Langi has stepped into a larger role this season and emerged as one of the GNAC’s most versatile players, delivering 6.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game (20th in GNAC) ... with multiple assists in 18 games, 7-plus rebounds in six games and double-digit scoring in 10 games, Langi has shown equal proficiency as a scorer, passer and rebounder ... one of five Bay Area natives on the roster, she posted a career-high 10 rebounds in the second win over Holy Names, and she delivered a career-high 17-point effort, while dishing four assists without a turnover against MSUB.

 

MASTER OF MAYHEM: Now in his seventh season at UAA and eighth season as a head coach, Ryan McCarthy has ascended to the top of two impressive lists this year, as the NCAA Div. II active leader in career winning percentage (.816) and the all-time winningest coach in UAA women’s basketball history ... on Jan. 27, McCarthy passed Linda Bruns (176-142, 1979-91) with his 177th victory to become the Seawolves’ career wins leader ... since coming north in 2012, McCarthy has led the Seawolf program to unprecedented heights, capturing five straight GNAC regular-season titles (four outright), three GNAC Tournament titles, six straight NCAA Tournament berths, and ascending as high as No. 1 or No. 2 in the national rankings every season from 2014-15 through 2017-18 ... this year McCarthy earned his third consecutive GNAC Coach of the Year honor and fourth in the last five seasons, while he was the WBCA NCAA Div. II West Region Coach of the Year three straight times from 2015-17 ... in 2016-17, the Anchorage native led UAA to its third straight top-2 regional seed and its second straight 30-win season (30-2), while recording the first 20-0 league record in GNAC history ... the previous season, McCarthy’s crew set an NCAA Div. II record with 38 victories, advancing all the way to the 2016 National Title Game in Indianapolis ... his 2014-15 club claimed what was then the best winning percentage in program history with a 29-2 (.935) mark, sweeping both GNAC titles as well ... McCarthy led UAA to an improvement in overall wins (17, 19, 29, 38) his first four seasons and increased the Seawolves’ GNAC victory total in each of his first five campaigns (11, 12, 17, 18, 20) … playing its up-tempo ‘Mayhem’ style, McCarthy’s crews led the nation in steals per game for four straight seasons  (2013-14 to 2016-17), while ranking 6th last year and 2nd this year ... McCarthy sports head-coaching records of 190-33 (.852) in seven seasons at UAA and 204-46 (.816) in eight seasons overall, having served in an interim capacity at Northwest Nazarene in 2010-11 … McCarthy is assisted by 7th-year associate head coach Shaina Afoa, who was voted by her peers as the 2017-18 WBCA NCAA Div. II National Assistant Coach of the Year, 1st-year assistant and former Seawolf standout Sierra Afoa, and 5th-year volunteer assistant Patrick Flanigin.
