INDIANAPOLIS – A loss last week to league co-champion Northwest Nazarene has knocked the Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball team from the top spot to No. 3 in Wednesday’s third official NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, which go toward determining NCAA Tournament qualification.

The Seawolves, who are 23-3 against D-II competition, are joined in the regional rankings by fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference members Northwest Nazarene (22-3) at No. 2, Seattle Pacific (21-6) at No. 6, and Montana State Billings (17-11) at No. 8.

Pacific West Conference leader Azusa Pacific (24-3) rose from second to No. 1, while fellow Pac West program Hawaii Pacific (23-3) fell one spot to No. 4. California Collegiate Athletic Association leader UC San Diego (25-3) stands No. 5.

The rankings take into account only games played through Feb. 25.

This marks the final public version of regional rankings prior to the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field on Mar. 4 (6 p.m. AST on ncaa.com). The top five ‘at-large’ teams – along with the winners of the GNAC, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pac West Conference tournaments – will make the NCAAs, with the top seed generally earning the right to host.

Currently 5-2 against teams in this week’s regional poll, the Seawolves have an opportunity to move back into the top spot by winning the GNAC Tournament, possibly combined with an Azusa Pacific loss in the Pac West Tournament.

The 2nd-seeded Seawolves play 3rd-seeded SPU or 6th-seeded Simon Fraser in Friday’s 7:30 p.m. GNAC Tournament semifinal at the Alaska Airlines Center, with the winner advancing to Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. title game.
