ANCHORAGE – Alaska Anchorage women’s basketball head coach Ryan McCarthy added another former NCAA Div. I player to his 2017-18 roster Friday, announcing that guard Kian McNair has transferred to UAA from Portland State and will have two seasons of eligibility with the Seawolves.

A 5-8 guard from Vallejo, Calif., McNair played in 57 games in her two seasons with the Vikings, collecting 426 points, 90 assists and 99 steals. As a true freshman in 2015-16, she started 29 of 30 games, leading PSU with averages of 11.3 points and 2.5 steals – third-best in the Big Sky Conference – per game. McNair recorded 18 double-digit scoring games as a rookie, including a career-high 22 points against Montana. She saw action in 27 games as a reserve in 2016-17, posting a season-high 11 points in a win over North Dakota.

“We are thrilled to add an impact player to our team this late in the recruiting process,” said McCarthy, whose program has led NCAA Div. II women’s basketball with 97 wins over the last three seasons. “Kian is a special athlete and can play any of the three guard positions. She is very explosive and has the ability to defend at an elite level. She is exactly what we needed to give us the depth we require to play our style of basketball."

As a prep star in the Bay Area, McNair helped Salesian High School to the Open Division NorCal championship and a State runner-up finish as a junior, contributing to a team that was ranked No. 1 in Northern California, No. 4 in the state and No. 17 in the USA Today national poll. As a senior, she was the Pride’s defensive MVP.

McNair brings UAA’s recruiting class to nine players, joining Rainey Kuykendall (6-0, Jr., F, Chicago, Ill./Montini Catholic HS/Trinity Valley CC), Sala Langi (5-10, Fr., G/F, Pacifica, Calif./Oceana HS), Victoria Langi (5-6, Jr., G, Pacifica, Calif./Mercy Burlingame HS/Skyline College), Dajhae Mullins (5-10, Sr., G/F, Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic HS/Trinity Valley CC/Sacramento State), Nicole Pinckney (5-5, Fr., G, Chugiak HS), two-time JC All-American Sydni Stallworth (5-3, Jr., G, Tucson, Ariz./Palo Verde HS/Pima CC), Tennae Voliva (6-0, Fr., F, East Anchorage HS) and Rodericka Ware (5-7, Sr., G, Lakewood, Wash./Lakes HS/Cent.
