ANCHORAGE – Victor Joseph scored 20 points and Jakub Niziol sparked a second-half surge with 5-of-5 three-point accuracy to lead the Mustangs to a victory over the Cougars in the opening game of the 40th annual GCI Great Alaska Shootout.
Joseph shot 4 of 6 from long range and backcourt mate Donovan Fields was 3 of 5 as Cal Poly (3-2) connected at a blazing 14 of 25 (.560) from deep.
Charleston (2-2) got a monster 26-point, 10-assist, 6 rebound effort from guard Joe Chealey but could not overcome the hot shooting of the Big West Conference club.
Cal Poly moves on to Friday’s 5:30 p.m. AST semifinal against the winner of the Central Michigan/Sam Houston State matchup, while Charleston will face the CMU/SHSU loser in the consolation semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Shawn Roundtree scored 20 points and dished six assists as the Chippewas controlled action from the opening tip and earned a spot in the GCI Great Alaska Shootout semifinals with a win over the Bearkats on Wednesday.
Cecil Williams added 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and fellow forward David DiLeo had nine points and 11 rebounds for CMU (3-1), which outscored its Southland Conference opponent 16-3 from the free-throw stripe.
SHSU (2-2) was led by 14 points and eight rebounds from guard Jamal Williams, while Chris Galbreath Jr. chipped in 12 points in the loss.
CMU will face Cal Poly in Friday’s 5:30 p.m. semifinal game, while SHSU will take on College of Charleston in the consolation semis Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
