PORTLAND, Ore. – Led by a 3.66 grade-point average from sophomore Vanessa Hayes, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team landed five players on the 2017 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Academic All-Conference Team, released Wednesday by the league office.

A starting middle blocker in every match of her career, Hayes is a psychology major from Salem, Ore. (McNary HS).

The Seawolves had three players land their second conecutive GNAC academic award as juniors Chrisalyn Johnson (3.62, mechanical engineering), Leah Swiss (3.62, global logistics & supply chain management) and Taylor Noga (3.55, civil engineering) made the grade again. All three repeat honorees hail from Anchorage – Johnson and Swiss from Dimond High and Noga from East High.

Meanwhile, Hayes was joined by fellow first-time honoree Anais Vargas. A senior from Greeley, Colo. (University HS), Vargas carries a 3.22 GPA in elementary education.

UAA’s five selections equal the 2005 squad for second-most in program history. The 2003 team holds the record with six academic all-conference awards.

To earn a spot on the GNAC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.20 overall GPA and be in at least her second season of competition at a GNAC institution.

The Seawolves (16-9, 11-5 GNAC) end the regular season with four consecutive home matches at the Alaska Airlines Center, starting Thursday at 7 p.m. against Western Oregon.
