SAN DIEGO – Junior outside hitter Leah Swiss had nine kills and six digs to pace a dominant effort by 4th-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Saturday morning in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-21 volleyball sweep of Cal State Los Angeles at the Seaside Invitational at Golden Gymnasium.
The Golden Eagles (1-2) were led by 10 kills from Sifa Faaiu and 25 assists from Bailey Anderson.
After fighting through a pair of 5-set matches Friday, the Seawolves took control from the outset against CUSLA, connecting for a .414 attack percentage in the first set.
UAA trailed 16-14 in the second before head coach Chris Green called a timeout that swung the momentum. The Seawolves took the lead on a kill by Fa’amausili and two straight aces from freshman setter Casey Davenport, and UAA would win 11 of the final 14 rallies to earn the set.
Clinging to a 21-20 lead in the third set, Fa’amausili smashed a kill and Hayes and Anais Vargas teamed for a block. Hayes answered a Golden Eagle kill with one of her own, and the Seawolves claimed match point on a CSULA attack error.
Hayes, a sophomore middle blocker from Salem, Ore., committed just one error on 10 attack attempts to record a career-best .600 attack percentage.
The Seawolves play the last of their four matches at the Seaside Invitational at noon ADT Saturday when they face Azusa Pacific.
