ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Anchorage gymnastics roster will take on a European flavor in 2013 as Seawolves head coach Paul Stoklos announced Thursday that Marie-Sophie Boggasch and Simone Penker have signed National Letters of Intent.

Boggasch, of Ötigheim, Germany, and Penker, of Maria Saal, Austria, both currently compete in the German Turnliga for their respective club teams, along with multiple international competitions throughout Europe.

“Both of these athletes come with a great degree of difficulty in their respective routines,” said Stoklos, who will enter his 29th season at UAA this fall.  “To some extent, they will be able to reduce some of the difficult skills in order to allow them to perform their routines better.  Both of these athletes have competed in the World Championships representing their countries, and we anticipate both will be strong all-arounders for us.”

Outside the United States, gymnasts compete under FIG, or international, rules.  The rules are stricter and the scoring system is open-ended, not based on a 10.0, thus rewarding gymnasts with more difficulty in their routines.

Boggasch and Penker are the first signees in the 2012-13 recruiting class.

The Seawolves are an NCAA Div. I program that competes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
