Seawolves shine at distance carnival

EAGLE ROCK & NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves completed Day 2 of their California trek with competition at the Occidental Distance Carnival in Eagle Rock and the Northridge Spring Break Multi in Northridge on Friday.

Highlighting the UAA men's performances was junior Micah Chelimo, who led the pack with a first-place finish in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of eight minutes, 56.37 seconds. Senior Alfred Kangogo also produced a podium finish, placing third in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:52.57.

UAA took first and third in the men's 10,000 meters, with a win by rookie Dylan Anthony (30:52.53) and the final podium postion going to senior Yonatan Yilma (31:19.69).

On the women’s side, freshman Susan Tanui furnished her first school record, displacing current teammate Hallidie Wilt’s 3,000-meter steeplechase time of 10:42.9 with a new time of 10:37.65. Wilt had just set the record at the Ben Brown Invite on March 10.

In the women's 1500-meter race, sophomore Ivy O'Guinn earned a second-place result with a time of 4:32.24, while senior Ruth Keino posted a time of 4:36.

In addition to the distance carnival, three Seawolves competed in the multi-event meet in Northridge with senior Kelsea Johnson qualifying provisionally for the NCAAs.Johnson finished the heptathlon with 4,838 points, good for second place and a new school record

Senior newcomer Micah Johnson also improved his mark in the men’s pole vault, setting a new UAA record at 13-7.25. Johnson finished 16th overall in the decathlon at 5,212, while senior Wyatt Morgan was 13th at 5,516.

The Seawolves will come together tomorrow for the Northridge Invitational.
