Chelimo, Tanui collect GNAC top honors

SPOKANE, Wash.  - Alaska Anchorage junior Micah Chelimo was voted the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Male Athlete-of-the-Year, while classmate Susan Tanui furnished co-GNAC Female Athlete-of-the-Year honors, announced by the league on Thursday.

Chelimo, from Kapkoi, Kenya was a unanimous selection receiving all nine first-place votes from the league's coaches, while Tanui, a local of Eldoret, Kenya, shared the honor with Seattle Pacific's Brittany Aanstad, each receiving four first-place votes. Tanui also received GNAC Female Newcomer-of-the-Year, earning all nice first-place votes.

Joining Chelimo and Tanui with special awards were UAA's Cody Parker and Grace Morgan. Parker (Comox, B.C.) and Morgan (Salt Spring Island, B.C.) were voted the GNAC Male and Female Freshman of the Year, respectively. Western Oregon's Landon Burningham took home GNAC Male Newcomer-of-the-Year.

Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell and Karl Lerum, who guided Western Washington and Seattle Pacific to GNAC outdoor team titles, were voted the GNAC Male Team and Female Team Coaches-of-the-Year, respectively.
