Seawolves aim for titles at GNACs

NOTES: The UAA women's team enters the championships with 8 points that were collected by senior Kelsey Johnson at the GNAC Multi-Event Championships on April 30-May 1 ... combined, the Seawolves have registered 45 GNAC automatic times/marks ... UAA leads the GNAC in 14 events, including 13 of the 24 running events ... looking to defend their titles from a year ago on the men's side are senior Shaun Ward (400-meter hurdles) and junior Micah Chelimo (3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters; both enter the meet with the top times in their respective events ... Chelimo also won in the steeplechase in 2010 ... both of the men's relay teams will also look to defend their titles ... UAA's 4x400-meter relay team has won three straight titles ... also entering the championships with the GNAC's top times/marks of the season are Ethan Hewitt (400m), Alfred Kangogo (1500m), Cody Parker (javelin) and Yonatan Yilma (10K) ... on the women's side, senior Ruth Keino will aim for her second consecutive title in the 5,000 meters ... UAA holds 9 of the top 10 times this season in the 5K ... Grace Morgan (200m), Haleigh Lloyd (400m, 400mH), Ivy O'Guinn (1500m) and Susan Tanui (steeple) each have the GNAC's top times of the season.
AT THE GNAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: The UAA men's team has finished in the top five since 2006 at the GNAC Championships with a program-best second-place finish in 2008 ... the Seawolves have finished fourth for the past two seasons ... the women's squad has finished sixth for two consecutive seasons after posting a program-high fifth place in 2008 ... UAA has combined for 32 individual titles (22 men, 12 women) since 2002 ... Sean Rivers became UAA's first GNAC champion in track & field, winning the 10,000 meters in 2002, while Stacy Edwards won the women's first title, in the 10K in 2003 ... David Registe leads UAA with eight career titles (5 individual, 3 relay), while three women have two titles - Kim Brady, Laura Carr and Mary Pearce.
SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves have registered five GNAC records this season, improved 12 school records (7 women, 5 men) and posted 71 top-10 results in the all-time UAA record book (36 men, 35 women) ... Western Washington is the only other GNAC school with a league record this season ... combined, UAA has posted 19 (12 women, 7 men) top-10 all-time results in the GNAC this season ... currently, UAA has eight NCAA automatic times/marks by seven athletes (5 women, 2 men), while 13 athletes (8 women, 5 men) have combined for 17 NCAA provisional times/marks ... the Seawolves have 11 times/marks in the top 10 nationally ... UAA is ranked nationally for the fifth straight week, with the men at No. 14 and the women at No. 15 ... the men's team has been ranked in the top 20 since the beginning of the 2010 season. ATHLETE NOTES: Currently with the 3rd-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in Div. II is sophomore Susan Tanui with a GNAC-record and NCAA automatic time of 10:15.47, set April 6 ... Tanui, from Eldoret, Kenya, also ranks 9th in the 5,000 meters (16:36.13), good for 5th in the conference record book ... senior Hallidie Wilt also booked a ticket to the NCAAs in the steeplechase with a time of 10:31.30, good for 10th in the nation and the 2nd-fastest in GNAC history ... Wilt, from Unalaska, also ranks 29th in the 5K in the NCAA ... sophomore Haleigh Lloyd improved upon her GNAC record in the 400-meter hurdles from earlier this season with a NCAA auto time of 59.62 on April 20 ... the time currently ranks her 8th in the nation ... Lloyd has not only set the UAA record in the 400mH, but also in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.42 ... the Ladysmith, B.C., native was also a member of the 4x100-meter relay that set a school record at 48.00 on April 21 ... sophomore Ivy O'Guinn earned a trip to the NCAAs on May 5 with an automatic time of 4:25.19 on the 1500 meters, currently ranking 4th ... O'Guinn is also ranked in the 800 meters (24th, 2:12.26) and the 5K (28th, 17:05.56) ... a local of Soldotna, O'Guinn's 1500m is the 6th-fastest in GNAC history, while her 5K time is the 9th-fastest ... Ruth Keino, from Kapcheno, Kenya, ranks 8th in the 5K with a UAA record of 16:34.28, and 11th in the 10,000 meters at 34:48.64 ... senior Kelsea Johnson broke her UAA record in the heptathlon with 4,940 points, ranking her 10th in the NCAA ... Johnson also broke the UAA record in the long jump with a provisional jump of 18-6.5 ... holding provisional times for UAA are sophomore Susan Bick (37th, 2:13.77) in the 800 meters, Miriam Kipng'eno (20th, 16:51.04) in the 5K and rookie Bryn Haebe (33rd, 11:08.23) in the steeplechase ... Grace Morgan is giving UAA some impressive numbers as a rookie ... a local of Salt Spring Island, B.C., Morgan has the 2nd-fastest 200-meter time for UAA at 24.89, good for 3rd-fastest in the GNAC record book ... earlier this season, Morgan set the UAA record in the 100 meters with a time of 12.34 ... on the men's side, junior Micah Chelimo has the 3rd-fastest time in Div. II in the 5K with a GNAC-record and automatic time of 13:53.51 ... a local of Kapkoi, Kenya, Chelimo also ranks 3rd in the steeplechase with a GNAC-record and automatic time of 8:45.63 ... Chelimo also is ranked 11th in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:48.49 ... senior All-American Shaun Ward collected UAA's fifth GNAC record of the season with a provisional time of 52.00 in the 400-meter hurdles ... the time ranks the Eagle River native 11th in the NCAAs ... picking up a provisional time in the 400mH was freshman Elliott Bauer at the Long Beach State Invite with a time of 53.47, good for 8th-fastest in the GNAC record book ... improving upon his own UAA record in the javelin was freshman Cody Parker with a toss of 215-4, earning the Comox, B.C., native an automatic bid to the NCAAs and ranking 7th in Div. II ... the GNAC record in the javelin is 223-2 by Northwest Nazarene's Josh Heidegger (2009) ... senior Alfred Kangogo holds a provisional time in the 1500 meters of 3:46.74, currently good for 7th-best in the NCAA ... a local of Eldoret, Kenya, Kangogo holds the GNAC record in the event at 3:44.67.
GNAC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: The GNAC named sophomore Ivy O'Guinn as the co-Athlete of the Week on May 7 following her record-breaking performance at the Occidental Invitational on May 5 ... O'Guinn, of Soldotna, guaranteed herself a trip to the 2012 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo., with an automatic qualifying time of 4:25.19 in the 1500 meters ... a 2011 NCAA participant, O'Guinn broke the UAA record in the event, besting her own time of 4:28.26, set earlier this season on April 19 at the Mt. SAC Relays ... O'Guinn, who received a league honor as a freshman, shared the honor with Seattle Pacific's Ali Worthen, while Alex Harrison of Western Washington claimed the men's honor outright.
