SPOKANE, Wash. - Senior Shaun Ward became the sixth Alaska Anchorage track & field student-athlete this season to be named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Athlete of the Week for his record-breaking performance at the Azusa Pacific Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday.

A local of Eagle River, Ward broke the league record in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.00, besting the previous mark of 52.05 set by Dallas Beaty of Northwest Nazarene in 2009. Currently, Ward's time ranks fifth in Div. II.

Ward joins teammates Micah Chelimo, Susan Tanui, Hallidie Wilt, Haleigh Lloyd and Cody Parker as UAA recipients this season. Collecting the women's weekly honor was Western Washington's Emily Warman.

The Seawolves are idle this weekend before sending athletes to the GNAC Multi-Event Championships on April 30-May 1 and the Occidental Invitational on May 5.
