ANCHORAGE - Alaska Anchorage's Alfred Kangogo held off teammate Micah Chelimo to capture the Skinny Raven Sports Laird Prosser Memorial Mile Run Saturday in the featured event of the 2012 Big C Relays at The Dome.
In an exhibition event which saw the duo battle down the final straightaway, Kangogo won in the time of four minutes and 5.16 seconds while Chelimo registered 4:05.28. Besides chasing each other, both were also running in hopes of becoming the first in to eclipse the four-minute barrier in the mile run in Alaska.
Meanwhile UAA's Ivy O'Guinn won the women's mile in 4:51.72, nipping teammate Susan Tanui, who finished in 4:52.32. The Seawolves' Ruth Keino was third in 4:55.23 and Miriam Kipng'eno fourth in 4:58.26.
UAA head coach Michael Friess's men's and women's track and field teams will resume action next weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Some UAA team members will also take part in the Azusa Pacific Invite and the Long Beach State Invite.
