Adams, Hails take marathon titles

ANCHORAGE – Seward’s Matthew Adams and Massachusetts Kate Hails came away with marathon titles in Saturday's 39th annual Mayor's Marathon & Half Marathon, presented by ConocoPhillips.

Adams, an Alaska state high school cross country champion for Seward High, completed the 26.2 miles in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and six seconds, outdistancing Solomon Kandie, who finished runner-up at 2:32.11. Kandie’s brother and former UAA All-American, David Kiplagat, finished third at 2:45.46 at West High School.

Meanwhile, Hails (Somerville, Mass.) posted a winning women's marathon time of 2:59.55. Coming in second was Anchorage’s Emma Bohman at 3:03.29, while Jeanne-Clarie White was third at 3:04.45. As the top Alaskans, Adms and Bohman each earned a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines.

In the half marathon, Chris Eversman, from Fairbanks, took the men’s title at 1:16.22, while UAA’s Susan Tanui (Eldoret, Kenya) cross first in the women’s race and fourth overall at 1:22.40.

Other winners Saturday's included Josh Sherfey (31:25) and Denali Foldager (34:43) in the men’s and women’s 5.6-miler, respectively, and Briahna Gerlach (11:33) and Sebastian Mittelstadt (11:33) in the 1.7-mile youth cup.

The Mayor's Marathon and Half-Marathon is organized by the University of Alaska Anchorage Department of Athletics and the Municipality of Anchorage. Nearly 4,200 runners participated in this year's event, representing 49 states and multiple countries.
