ABOUT LAST WEEK: The Seawolves saw a pair of long win streaks come to an end with home losses to Northwest Nazarene (76-49, Jan. 17) and Central Washington (74-64, Jan. 19) … NNU snapped an 8-game losing streak against UAA as Sr. F Alysa Horn led the Seawolves with 13 points and 12 rebounds … So. G Alli Madison had 11 points, while Fr. G Alyssa Hutchins tallied career-highs of 8 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench … on Saturday, UAA erased a 17-point deficit to take a late lead, but CWU rallied back to end an 11-game losing skid in the series … Horn scored 16 points, while three Seawolves posted career-high stats — Jr. F Kylie Burns with 14 rebounds, Alli Madison with 8 assists and Fr. G Jessica Madison with 16 points (7-12 FG, 2-4 3FG) … Horn played the full 40 minutes against CWU and Burns did so for both games as UAA played without injured Sr. PG Sasha King (15.7 ppg, 6.4 apg).

TEAM NOTES: UAA is in the top 50 in seven categories in the latest NCAA Div. II national stats rankings, including 10th in 3FGs per game (8.5), 14th in assist-turnover ratio (1.1), 19th in FT% (.758) and 25th in turnover margin (5.2) … in the GNAC stats, UAA ranks 2nd in 3FGs per game and turnover margin, plus 3rd in assists (16.3 apg), steals (10.3 spg) and FT% … the Seawolves have tied or broken three program single-game records, equaling the marks for fewest turnovers (6 vs Regis, Nov. 17) and 3FGs made (14 vs NDSU), while setting a new standard with 12-of-12 FT shooting vs. Regis on Nov. 16 … the 26-point margin against North Dakota State was UAA’s 3rd-largest over a D-I opponent, trailing only a 89-47 win over Coastal Carolina in 2009 and a 72-44 pounding of Cal State Northridge in 2008 … the Seawolves’ loss to Colorado Mines snapped their 22-game home winning streak, dating to a Jan. 20, 2011 loss to Western Washington … the losses to SFU and WWU on Jan. 3 and Jan. 5 snapped a streak of nearly four years without back-to-back losses on its primary home court at the WFSC (Jan. 19 & 21, 2006, St. Martin’s/Seattle) … the Mines loss also snapped a 33-game win streak when leading at halftime, dating to Jan. 20, 2011.

HORN SOUNDS OFF: Sr. F Alysa Horn is showing why she was a unanimous Preseason All-GNAC selection in voting by the league’s coaches, following all-league honorable mention last year and 2nd-team honors as a sophomore … midway through the campaign, Horn is 8th in the GNAC in scoring (14.5 ppg) and ranks 3rd in rebounding (8.5 rpg), 2nd in minutes (34.7 mpg), 6th in blocks (1.1 bpg), 8th in 3FG% (.385) and 15th in FT% (.732) … the Kodiak product has now moved into UAA’s career top 20 in 14 categories, including points (14th, 936), rebounds (13th, 523), FG made (16th, 335), 3FGs made (t-8th, 104), 3FG% (11th, .347), FT% (9th, .747), blocks (15th, 41) and victories (6th, 78); she needs just one more victory to reach the top 4 on that list … with two blocks last week, Horn became just the sixth Seawolf to accumulate 900 points, 500 rebounds and 40 blocks in her career … Horn was also an All-Tournament Team pick at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in November after equaling her then-career high with 25 points in the win over North Dakota State … her Most Outstanding Player performance in the AT&T Hoops Classic (Dec. 17-19) earned her GNAC Player of the Week honors for the 4th time in her career.

KING-SIZE TALENT: Sr. PG Sasha King was a unanimous Preseason All-GNAC selection as well … despite being slowed by an ankle injury that cost her the last two games, the Oklahoman still leads the GNAC with 3.1 steals and 6.4 assists per game, along with other league ranks of 4th in scoring (15.7 ppg), 2nd in asst.-TO ratio (1.8), 7th in FT% (.851), 3rd in 3FGs per game (2.5), 4th in minutes (32.2 mpg) and 12th in blocks (0.7 bpg) … in the D-II national ranks, she is 2nd in assists, 28th in assist-TO ratio and 23rd in steals … King has scored double figures in 11 of her 13 games and dished at least 5 assists on nine occasions … King has moved into 9th place on UAA’s all-time assists list, now with 248, and needs just two more to catch Kelly Reilly (1985-87) for 8th … on UAA’s other career lists, she is 1st in assists per game (5.0), 8th in steals per game (2.4), 6th in 3FGs per game (1.4), 8th in 3FG% (.371) and 12th in 3FGs made (79).

MORE PLAYER NOTES: Moving into the starting lineup for the first time this season, Jr. G/F Kylie Burns ranks among the team leaders in scoring (9.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg), doubling her sophomore numbers in both categories … Burns has averaged 9.0 rebounds over the last three games — boosted by a career-high 14 on Saturday against Central Washington — and has tallied at least 8 points in five straight contests … in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, the Kansas City native scored double figures in both games and was selected to the All-Tournament Team … Fr. G Jessica Madison has become one of UAA’s most reliable offensive threats, scoring double figures in five of the last six contests, including a career-high 16 points against Central Washington … the Port Angeles, Wash., product is averaging 9.6 points overall and 11.0 ppg in GNAC contests … in the GNAC stats, Madison is 8th in FG% (.478) and 13th in 3FG% (.348) and 3FGs per game (1.5) … So. G/F Alli Madison has scored at least 7 points in eight of nine games since returning from injury on Dec. 17 … the Seattle native — no relation to Jessica — is averaging 11.3 ppg in GNAC play, boosted by a career-high 15 points in the win at SPU … Fr. G Jenna Buchanan has made a quick transition to the college game, averaging 6.7 ppg and ranking 3rd on the team in rebounding (4.1 rpg) and steals (1.5, No. 20 GNAC) … 5th-year Sr. G Jordan Martin has had a major breakthrough in her final campaign, averaging 5.9 ppg and 2.8 rpg, boosted by four straight double-digit scoring games from Dec. 1-19 … with 77 points and 274 minutes played, the East Anchorage High product has already surpassed her career totals (35 pts, 178 min.) coming into 2012-13 … Martin leads UAA with her .574 FG% and .588 3FG%.

McCARTHY MAKES DEBUT: The ninth head coach to roam the sidelines for UAA women’s basketball, Ryan McCarthy is making Seawolf debut this season … formerly an assistant at GNAC rival Northwest Nazarene, McCarthy now has an 22-20 overall record as a head coach, having served in an interim capacity at NNU two seasons ago … McCarthy is assisted by first-year staff members RyAnne Ridge and Shaina Afoa.

SEAWOLVES PICKED 5TH: Defending champion UAA was picked to finish 5th in the 2012-13 Great Northwest Athletic Conference women’s basketball title chase, according to the league’s 12th annual coaches’ poll, released Oct. 25 … Western Washington, which finished runner-up to UAA a year ago, was picked to win the league with seven of 10 first-place votes, narrowly outpointing Simon Fraser.
