NEW ORLEANS – The postseason accolades continue pouring in for Alaska Anchorage senior cross country national champion Caroline Kurgat as she was named the Div. II Female Scholar Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday.
In addition, a total of seven Seawolves and both the women’s and men’s programs earned 2017 NCAA Div. II All-Academic Individual or Team recognition, respectively.
Kurgat, from Eldoret, Kenya and Medical Laboratory Science and Nursing major, won the first national title in women’s history in convincing fashion on Nov. 18. She possesses a 3.51 GPA. The impressive senior joins Micah Chelimo as the only Seawolves to garner the prestigious honor, following his national win in 2012.
She also won by wide margins at the NCAA Div. II West Region, GNAC Cross Country Championships and Lewis Conference Crossover. Kurgat was named National, West Region and GNAC Athlete/Runner of the Year as well as a three-time USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week.
She is the current DII Honda Athlete of the Year nominee for Cross Country. The 2018 Honda Woman Athlete of the Year will be presented in a live telecast on CBS Sports on June 27, 2018, in downtown Los Angeles.
Kurgat joins teammates Mariah Burroughs, Kimberly Coscia, Zennah Jepchumba, Danielle McCormick, and Tamara Perez to be named 2017 NCAA Div. II Women’s All-Academic Individuals. Edwin Kangogo earned recognition for the men.
The women’s program tallied a 3.5 GPA to become a 2017 NCAA Div. II Cross Country Women’s All-Academic Team. The UAA men also earned the honor on the men’s side with a 3.07 GPA. Both teams earned distinction for the 11th consecutive season.
The individual All-Academic honor was awarded to athletes who compiled a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 and finished among the top 30 percent of eligible runners at his or her regional championships and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA Championships.
