If you are interested in competing in intercollegiate
athletics for the University of Alaska Anchorage, please complete the
following form and submit it to the athletic program in which you are
interested in participating. This form is NOT an official university application. Please be aware that this is not a secure form.
For general correspondence, you can also use the UAA Athletic Department Directory.
How do I become a student-athlete at the University of Alaska Anchorage?
There are a few different ways you can become a
student-athlete at UAA. Some student-athletes are recruited to UAA to
participate in a particular sport. There are numerous recruiting
regulations that the UAA coaching staff must follow that may be helpful
for you to know. For example, telephone calls are regulated by the NCAA
and may only take place at certain times of your academic career.
Some student-athletes have the opportunity to 'walk
on' to a team at UAA. If you want to walk on, you must be a regularly
enrolled baccalaureate degree-seeking student and be registered for at
least 12 credit hours each semester. You should contact the head coach
of the sport you are interested in participating in for information
about walk-on opportunities.
Finally, a Division II institution is allowed to
conduct tryouts. (Not applicable for our Div. I sports of women's
gymnastics and men's ice hockey). Therefore, you may have the
opportunity to tryout for a team at UAA. Again, contact the head coach
of the sport you are interested in participating in for information on
tryout opportunities.
How do I apply for admission to UAA?
Please see www.uaa.alaska.edu/admissions/ for admission information for prospective students and admissions information.
Is athletic financial aid available at UAA?
Yes. Athletic financial aid is available at UAA.
However, not all student-athletes at UAA receive athletic aid. The head
coach of each sport is responsible for awarding athletic aid according
to their specific sport scholarship budget. There are a few full
athletic scholarships given at UAA. However, most of the athletic
scholarships awarded are partial scholarships. Per NCAA and conference
rules, a full athletic scholarship at UAA equals the cost of tuition,
fees, room, board and books. A partial athletic scholarship is anything
less than that and can range from $1 up to a full scholarship. There's
no guaranteed four-year athletics scholarship in Division I or II. An
athletics scholarship is awarded for one academic year. It may be
renewed each year for a maximum of five years within a six-year period.
Please contact the head coach of the sport you are interested in for
more information on athletic financial aid at UAA.
What is the NCAA Eligibility Center?
The NCAA Eligibility Center is a central
clearinghouse that certifies the academic and amateur eligibility of
all student-athletes attending Division I and II institutions to
participate in athletics.
IF YOU INTEND TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS AS A
FRESHMAN AT UAA, YOU MUST REGISTER AND BE CERTIFIED AS A QUALIFER AND
AN AMATEUR BY THE NCAA ELIGIBILITY CENTER.
For specific information regarding these requirements and how to register, visit www.eligibilitycenter.org.
If I want to transfer from a 2-year or 4-year college to UAA, will I be immediately eligible to participate in athletics?
Please
note that if you are currently on a collegiate team at another 4 year
institution, you must have a signed release before we can talk to you.
There are numerous NCAA and conference rules that may affect your
eligibility status when transferring from a 2-year or 4-year
institution to UAA. For specific information on transfer regulations,
you may visit ncaa.org, or contact UAA associate athletic director andma@uaa.alaska.edu.
