INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced the participants for the 2019 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track and Field Championships Tuesday and it includes 10 student-athletes from the University of Alaska Anchorage.
Caroline Kurgat will look to defend her national titles in both the 5,000 and 10,000. The Eldoret, Kenya, native is the top-seed in both events and is making her fourth appearance at the outdoor national championships. She holds the all-time Div. II record in the 10,000 (32:08.09) and has the third-fastest performance all-time in the 5,000 (15:40.45).
Danielle McCormick will be competing in the 800 for the third straight year. The Soldotna, native is the two-time defending conference champion in the 800 and won the national title in the 800 at the 2018 NCAA Indoor National Championships.
Chrisalyn Johnson will be making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships competing in the long and triple jumps. The Anchorage, native holds the school record in both the long (19-5.25) and triple jump (41-3.25).
Vanessa Aniteye is making her third straight appearance in the 400 at the NCAA Championships. She is the three-time defending GNAC champion in the 400.
The Seawolves will have a pair of competitors in the men’s steeplechase. Edwin Kangogo competed in the steeplechase at the 2017 championships before redshirting the 2018 season. Wesley Kirui competed in the steeplechase at the NCAA Div. I National Championships in 2018 for Hampton before transferring to Alaska Anchorage in the fall.
UAA will be sending a women’s 4x400 relay to the national championships for the third straight year. Vanessa Aniteye and Danielle McCormick will each be running a leg of the relay for the third year in a row. Tylantiss Atlas and Marie Ries will round out the relay and are making their first trip to the NCAA Championships.
The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships will take place May 23-25 in Kingsville, Texas.
