ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Alaska Fairbanks defeated Alaska Anchorage 4-0 to a take a 2-1 lead in the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup Friday. UAF will win the cup with a win or tie while UAA must win Saturday’s game and the tie-breaking shootout.
The game was riddled with penalties with the two teams whistled for a combine 29 penalties and 101 penalty minutes.
Max Newton scored the first goal for UAF at 14:40 of the first period during a flurry of shots on the UAA goal.
The Nanook’s lead grew to 3-0 after power-play goals by Steven Jandric at 8:46 of the second period and Ryker Leer at 3:29 of the third period.

Kristian Stead finished with 23 saves for UAA.
UAF was 2-for-6 on the man-advantage, and UAA was 0-for-5.
Fairbanks led 27-22 in shots.
Before the start of the game, UAA celebrated the gift of Gene Giza, a lifetime supporter of Seawolf hockey. Mr. Giza passed away in December 2016, but left the largest planned gift in the history of Seawolf Athletics. Seawolf fans joined the Giza family in recognizing Mr. Giza's legacy before the playing of the national anthem.
Faceoff for Saturday’s season finale is set for 7:07 pm at Sullivan Arena.
