FAIRBANKS (Dec. 10) – Autummn Williams scored a season-high 26 points and Tara Thompson added a career-high 15 points to help nationally 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage overcome a slow start for a 73-57 women’s basketball victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (7-1, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight points on 4-of-6 shooting from junior forward Sierra Afoa to run their winning streak to 19 against their oldest rivals, including 10 straight victories in Fairbanks.
The Nanooks (4-6, 0-3) were led by 23 points and nine rebounds from forward Jordan Wilson and 19 points and 10 rebounds from forward Kaillee Skjold as they outshot the visitors .473 to .448 and outrebounded them 37-32.
Despite their deficits in shooting and rebounding, the Seawolves managed 12 steals and forced 23 Nanook turnovers, while shooting 40 percent from three-point range to pull out the win. UAA also allowed the Nanooks just two trips to the free throw line, where they shot 0 of 2.
After trailing 6-0 out of the gate and 13-10 after one quarter, UAA turned things around in the second quarter, finally taking the lead for good at 19-18 on Dominique Thomas’s rebound putback with 3:49 remaining.
The Seawolves led 30-22 at halftime but could not pull away for good until the fourth quarter when back-to-back treys by Thompson and Williams made it 58-45 with 6:11 left.
Thompson, a sophomore guard, shot 5 of 7 from long range and tied senior Alysha Devine with a team-high five rebounds. The Dimond High product also had one assist and two steals with no turnovers in 27 minutes.
Meanwhile, Williams continued to show off her scoring prowess, tallying the most points for a Seawolf this year on 11-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-6 three-point accuracy. The senior transfer from Div. I Little Rock also dished three assists and equaled UAF’s team total with four steals.
UAA flies south next week to finish the non-conference season with three games in Hawaii, Dec. 13-17. The Seawolves will start against Pacific West Conference foe BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday with an 8 p.m. AST tip-off scheduled.
