ANCHORAGE – Southern California got 20 points apiece from Kristen Simon and Sadie Edwards on Wednesday and fought off a late Portland rally to earn the GCI Great Alaska Shootout title with a 67-54 women’s basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Trojans (4-1) also got 12 rebounds from Simon, who had her second straight double-double and claimed the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Edwards – who shot 7 of 11, with four assists and no turnovers in the title game – and guard Minyon Moore, who tallied 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals.

The Pilots (1-4) got 11 points, eight rebounds and four assists from forward Julie Spencer, while guard Holly Blades had eight points and made the all-tournament team.

After building a 19-point lead midway through the third quarter, the Trojans allowed the Pilots to make a big run, seeing their lead cut to 46-40 on the first possession of the fourth quarter. But Edwards found guard Courtney Jaco open for three-pointers twice in the next three minutes, and another Jaco trey stretched the advantage to double digits for good at 56-44 with 6:15 left.

USC earned its first GCI Great Alaska Shootout on its second trip north. The 1985-86 Trojan team that featured all-time great Cheryl Miller finished runner-up in the 1986 tournament – then known as the Northern Lights Invitational.
