Former Dimond star Thompson joins Seawolf women
A 5-7 guard, Thompson was a First Team All-State performer for the Lynx last year, leading her team to an ASAA Class 4A State Tournament berth. Also a two-time All-Cook Inlet Conference selection, she earned MVP honors at the 2014 CIC Tournament behind a 42-point outburst against South Anchorage. As a junior, Thompson was Third Team All-State and made the all-tournament team at the State Tournament, helping Dimond to a runner-up finish.
In addition to her basketball accomplishments, Thompson was one of the top flag football and softball players in the state, earning All-CIC honors in both sports.
“Tara is a terrific shooter and a superior all-around athlete,” said McCarthy, who led the Seawolves to a 19-9 record and an NCAA Tournament berth last season. “We are excited that she decided to stay at home and make a long-term contribution to our program.”
Thompson becomes the fifth newcomer to the Seawolves’ roster this year, joining fellow freshmen Leah Bonner (6-0, F, Nampa, Idaho/Skyview HS), Jerica Nelson (5-4, PG, Kodiak) and Hannah Wandersee (6-1, F/C, Kodiak), plus junior transfer Megan Mullings (6-1, F, Glendale, Ariz./South Mountain CC). She also brings the number of Alaskans on the roster to seven, joining former Dimond teammate and redshirt freshman Sierra Afoa, sophomore guard Jenna Buchanan (Galena), sophomore forward Alysha Devine (Wasilla), junior guard Alyssa Hutchins (Wasilla), Nelson and Wandersee.
