SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Central Washington has won three of its last four to remain in the playoff hunt … the Wildcats are led by the nation’s leading scorer in Sr. G Mark McLaughlin (27.5 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.0 apg, .477 FG, .835 FT), along with forwards JB Pillard (14.5 ppg, 8.3 rpg, .634 FG) and Kevin Davis (11.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg, .641 FG) … Northwest Nazarene has lost seven straight as it prepares to host UAF on Thursday night, although five of those games have been on the road … NNU is led by Mario Donaldson (14.3 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.4 apg, .757 FT) and Kevin Rima (13.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.3 bpg, .566 FG).

TOUGH HOME WEEKEND: The Seawolves suffered a rare sweep at their own Wells Fargo Sports Complex last week, falling 88-76 to 19th-ranked Seattle Pacific on Feb. 8 and 75-62 to Montana State Billings on Feb. 10 … on Thursday, UAA was tied with SPU with just over 2 minutes remaining before the Falcons scored 18 of the last 24 points … the Seawolves were led by 18 points (8-16 FG) and 3 assists from Sr. G Kyle Fossman, along with 14 points and 9 assists from Jr. G Travis Thompson and 14 points, 7 rebounds from Sr. G/F Colton Lauwers … Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds as UAA lost despite committing a school-record 3 team turnovers … on Saturday, the Seawolves were again tied last, at 55-55, before the Yellowjackets finished with a 20-7 run … Fossman and So. PG Brian McGill scored 16 points apiece, while Fossman also dished 6 assists … the loss to UAA’s first at home to MSUB since the Yellowjackets joined the GNAC in 2007-08.

TEAM NOTES: UAA leads NCAA Div. II with just 8.4 turnovers per game and a 2.11-to-1 assist-turnover ratio … the Seawolves also sport top-25 national ranks in FT% (2nd, .800), 3FGs per game (3rd, 12.2), assists (17th, 17.8 apg), turnover margin (21st, +3.9) and scoring offense (23rd, 85.8 ppg) … in the GNAC stats, the Seawolves lead in  FT%, 3FGs per game, assists and asst-TO ratio, and rank 2nd in scoring offense, 3FG% (.388) and turnover margin … UAA needs three more wins to earn the program’s ninth straight winning season and the 31st in 37 years … the Seawolves have also finished with a plus-.500 league record 25 times in 31 years of conference membership.

PLAYER NOTES: Jr. G Travis Thompson ranks No. 2 in the GNAC and 18th nationally with 21.3 points per game, along with top-10 national marks in 3FGs per game (7th, 3.5) and FT% (10th, .901) … Thompson leads the GNAC in 3FGs per game and FT%, plus ranks of 2nd in FT%, 4th in minutes (34.8), 13th in steals (1.3 spg), 8th in assist-turnover ratio (2.1), 15th in 3FG% (.402) and 14th in assists (2.8 apg) … coming off a redshirt season, the local Dimond HS product has tallied double figures in 22 of 24 games, including four times reaching the 30-point plateau, and five consecutive 25-plus games from Jan. 16-30 … he is currently on pace to break UAA’s single-season records for 3FGs made, while his FT% ranks 3rd and scoring average is 6th on the Seawolf single-season lists … a 2nd-Team All-GNAC pick in 2011-12 and a preseason all-league selection this year, Thompson has become the latest member of UAA’s 1,000-point club, now ranking 17th with 1,067 … on UAA’s other career lists, he is 4th in FT% (.874), 5th in 3FGs made (193), 8th in 3FG% (.434), 10th in FTs made (222) and 17th in assists (217); he needs just five more FTs to move into the top 10 and two more 3FGs to catch Kemmy Burgess (195, 2003-06) for No. 4 on the treys list ... Thompson was named Most Outstanding Player of the AT&T Jamboree and made the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in November, and he was the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week for Jan. 20-26 … along with Thompson, the presence of Sr. G Kyle Fossman gives UAA two 1,000-point scorers in the same lineup for the first time since 1986-87 (Jesse Jackson/Hansi Gnad), with the preseason all-league pick currently ranking 14th on UAA’s all-time list with 1,105 points … a First Team All-GNAC pick and team MVP as a junior, Fossman ranks 9th in the GNAC scoring race with 15.8 ppg, boosted by a career-high-tying 28 points in UAA’s Shootout loss to Div. I Indiana State … he is also among the league top-10 leaders in 3FGs made per game (2nd, 3.2), A-T ratio (4th, 2.8), minutes (3rd, 34.9 FT% (7th, .844),  assists (8th, 3.5), 3FG% (10th, .412) … in the NCAA national stats, the team’s only 4th-year senior is 11th in 3FGs per game and 27th in assist-TO ratio … Fossman has risen to 3rd place on UAA’s career 3FGs list at 221, meaning he would need to average 4.4 per game to break the Mark Drake’s career record (243, 2001-05) during the regular season … Fossman’s other Seawolf career ranks include 5th in 3FG% (.440), 7th in FT% (.848), t-8th in games started (76), 15th in assists (233), 14th in points (1,105) and t-16th in games played (99) … Fossman needs 38 points to move into the top 10 on that list, while with UAA’s next victory, he will tie Butch Lincoln (69 wins, 1992-97) for 10th … another preseason all-league pick and returning All-GNAC 2nd Team selection, Jr. G/F Teancum Stafford sits 20th in the GNAC scoring race with 13.2 ppg, boosted by a career-high 29 points in the 83-72 victory over No. 5 Minnesota State … Stafford is also 7th in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and 12th in 3FGs per game (2.0), and the 4.0 student is a top candidate for Academic All-America honors, having already been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team … since transferring from Snow (Utah) College last year, the Auburn, Wash., native has scored double figures in 40 of 48 appearances … the owner of five career double-doubles, Stafford is set to graduate this May with his degree in psychology … So. PG Brian McGill has made a enormous impact in his first year of eligibility since transferring from Western Oregon … after setting the GNAC and UAA single-game record with 20 assists on Dec. 16, McGill ranks No. 2 in the league with 6.0 apg, along with other GNAC ranks of 7th in scoring (16.7 ppg), 5th in asst-TO ratio (2.5), 7th in minutes (33.1 mpg) and 10th in FT% (.827) … the Clackamas, Ore., native was named the GNAC Red Lion Player of the Week following his 29-point, 10-assist performance in the league-opening victory over UAF, becoming just the fifth player in 14 years to tally at least 25 points and 10 assists in a GNAC game … nationally, McGill is 19th in assists and 42nd in A/T ratio … Sr. G/F Colton Lauwers has been UAA’s lunch-pail man, spelling McGill at the point and banging for rebounds at the power forward position … a former Dimond HS teammate of Thompson’s, Lauwers in 2nd in the GNAC with a 3-to-1 A/T ratio, dishing 51 assists with just 17 giveaways  in 455 minutes … Lauwers has scored double figures five times this year, including 14 points in Thursday’s loss to SPU … Jr. G Boomer Blossom has seen an increased role of late, playing a career-high 21 minutes at Western Washington on Feb. 1 and then topping that with 23 minutes against SPU … the Soldotna High product has scored 17 points over the last three games after going scoreless in five of the seven previous contests … So. F Christian Leckband scored seven points against MSUB to reach that mark for the ninth time this year … the Nome native has the 20th-best career 3FG% in UAA history at .386.

THE OSBORNE FILE: Tenth-year head coach Rusty Osborne (188-104) has led the Seawolves to eight straight winning seasons, five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals in his tenure at the helm … with UAA’s victory over Saint Martin’s on Jan. 25, he also became the winningest coach in program history with 187, surpassing former mentor Charlie Bruns … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne’s 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Osborne is assisted in by Cameron Turner (3rd season), graduate assistant Tim Mollerstrom (2nd season), and volunteer coach Dylan Hoch (1st season).

UAA PEGGED FOR SECOND: UAA was picked to finish runner-up by the league’s 10 head coaches in the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference preseason poll, released Oct. 15. Here’s a look at the poll, with actual finish denoted on the right:
