SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Montana State Billings has answered a 7-match losing streak by splitting its last six matches, including a 3-1 Saturday at Saint Martin’s … the Yellowjackets are led by OH Monica Grimsrud (3.75 kps, .210 att%, 1.75 dps, 0.54 bps) and MB Chelsey Walter (2.78 kps, .284 att%, 0.73 bps) … Seattle Pacific still has an outside shot at a playoff berth thanks to a 7-2 record since Oct. 17, including a 5-set (15-10) win at Western Oregon on Saturday … the Falcons are led by OH Madi Cavell (3.49 kps, .160 att%, 2.58 dps, 0.69 bps) and MB Nikki Lowell (2.73 kps, .252 att%, 1.33 bps).

THE SERIES vs. MSUB: UAA leads 39-10 (17-6 in Billings)
Last Meeting: UAA 3-0 (9/21/13 at UAA)
Streak: UAA 7 / Notes: UAA has won the last six of the last seven meetings via sweeps, although last year’s trip to Billings was the exception, with UAA winning 3-1 … UAA leads 8-5 since MSUB joined the GNAC in 2007 … UAA’s last losses came when Billings swept the 2009 season series … MSUB is UAA’s 2nd-most common opponent, trailing only UAF … teams met twice per season every year from 1985-2000 as members of the Pac West and Continental Divide conferences … series started in 1980.

LAST TIME vs MSUB/SPU: The Seawolves got the GNAC schedule off to a perfect start with home wins over Seattle Pacific (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23) on Sept. 19 and Montana State Billings (25-22, 25-15, 25-8) on Sept. 21 … on Thursday, So. RS Julia Mackey ripped 13 kills and Jr. OH Brooke Pottle finished a wild rally on match point with her 9th kill, helping UAA repel a late SPU charge … the Seawolves also got 11 kills from So. OH Katelynn Zanders, 17 digs from Jr. L Quinn Barker, and 24 assists, 10 digs from Sr. S Siobhan Johansen … Fr. S Morgan Hooe had 17 assists — including a bicycle-kick assist on match point — and  16 digs … on Saturday, Mackey and Zanders combined for 25 kills to lead a record-setting hitting effort against the Yellowjackets … the Seawolves also got 24 assists, 3 aces and 2 kills from Johansen to post the program’s best attack percentage in 13 years of GNAC play (since eclipsed at UAF), hitting .437 … Mackey finished with 13 kills and no attack errors on 20 attempts and Zanders posted 12-1-20 numbers as they recorded respective career-high percentages of .650 and .550 … the duo was among five Seawolves with at least four kills on plus-.500 hitting as they were joined by So. OH Sarah Johnson (.556, 5-0-9), Sr. MB Jodi Huddleston (.667, 4-0-6) and Fr. MB Erin Braun (.571, 4-0-7).

ABOUT LAST WEEK: The Seawolves split their final two matches ever at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, losing a first-place showdown to 10th-ranked Western Washington (1-3) on Nov. 14, before sweeping Simon Fraser in the finale on Nov. 16 … on Thursday, So. OH Katelynn Zanders ripped a match-high 20 kills and added 10 digs, but the Vikings recovered from a first-set loss to out-hit UAA .294 to .160 and knock the Seawolves out of first place for the first time all season … Jr. OH Brooke Pottle connected for a career-high 16 kills, along with 12 digs, while Jr. L Quinn Barker made 21 digs in the loss … on Saturday, Zanders helped UAA rally for the last four points of the first set to earn a 26-24, 25-11, 25-10 victory over the Clan … Zanders finished with 17 kills on .441 hitting, while So. OH Sarah Johnson came off the bench with season-highs of 14 kills and .522 hitting … Fr. S Morgan Hooe had 26 assists as the South Anchorage HS product set and tied career-highs with 4 blocks and 3 kills … Barker added a match-high 18 digs, and Fr. MB Erin Braun put up a career-high 9 block assists.

UAA 5TH IN WEST: UAA sits No. 8 in the second version of the NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, released Nov. 13, currently putting it in position to qualify for the eight-team NCAA West Regionals Championships, set for Dec. 5-7 … the Seawolves are among four GNAC teams in the poll, along with No. 5 WWU, No. 6 Central Washington and No. 10 Northwest Nazarene … UAA is 3-6 head-to-head against other regionally ranked West Region foes … the rankings will be updated this Wednesday, leading to the announcement of the NCAA field on Nov. 24.

TEAM NOTES: UAA has already clinched its fifth consecutive top-4 GNAC finish, including four top-3 showings in that span … with a 7-0 mark, the Seawolves have equaled their most GNAC road victories, having gone 7-1 in 2009 when the league had nine teams … UAA’s 9-0 start to GNAC play was its best since the league’s founding in 2001 and matched the 6th-longest win streak in program history … the Seawolves lead the league in aces (1.52 ace/set) and rank No. 2 in the GNAC in three of the six major stats categories — attack percentage (.216), assists per set (12.45) and kills per set (13.15) … in the NCAA Div. II national stats, UAA is 27th in blocks per set (2.31), 36th in assists and 46th in kills … with an 10-4 mark this year, UAA is now 47-11 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex since 2009 … UAA’s attack percentages of .520 at UAF and .437 against MSUB marked the sixth and seventh times this century a UAA team topped the .400 mark, with the UAF match ranking just behind the school-record of .534 (vs. Regis, 1982)… UAA’s 72 kills, 70 assists and .270 att% in 5 sets against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 14 remain GNAC-bests for 2013 … the 3-1 loss against No. 11 WWU on Nov. 14 made the Seawolves to 9-25 against ranked opponents under head coach Chris Green; prior to Green’s arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes.

’WOLF BITES: Before suffering an injury in late October, So. RS Julia Mackey (3.23 kps, .277 att%) was one of only two GNAC players averaging at least 3.0 kills and .250 hitting … during UAA’s 9-match win streak, Mackey averaged 3.53 kps on .348 hitting, with double-digit kills in every contest … the Fairbanks (West Valley HS) native hit .520 or better in three of her last eight matches, including a career-high .688 at UAF … on UAA’s career lists, Mackey currently ranks No. 7 in both kills per set (3.17) and attack pct. (.262) … one spot ahead of Mackey at No. 6 in career kills average (3.38 kps) is So. OH Katelynn Zanders … Zanders has posted double-digit kills in 19 of the last 23 matches — including a UAA season-high 22 in the win at Western Washington — and is recently strung together seven straight double-doubles … in the GNAC stats, the South Anchorage HS product is 5th in kills per set (3.55), 16th in attack pct. (.236), 16th in digs per set (2.79) and 4th in aces per set (0.32) … Zanders also leads UAA with 12 double-doubles overall, and she has been a two-time GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week … Sr. S/DS Siobhan Johansen has moved into UAA’s career top 20 on six  lists — assists (8th, 1,620), assists/set (12th, 4.15), digs (13th, 940), sets played (14th, 390), matches played (t-15th, 108) and total aces (18th, 87) … the Palmer (Colony HS) product has played in nearly every set of her career, playing setter, DS and libero … with current GNAC ranks of 7th in assists (6.68) and 3rd in aces (0.33), Johansen is splitting time at setter with Fr. S Morgan Hooe (4.55 assts/set) … Hooe, another South Anchorage product, came one short of her career-high with 26 assists against Simon Fraser … she also posted 4 block assists against SFU after entering the match with just one block on the season … Sr. MB Jodi Huddleston is No. 3 in the GNAC with 1.22 bps and ranks 21st nationally … the Nebraskan is also 11th in the league with her .258 attack pct. … Huddleston’s 9 total blocks Sept. 9 vs Colorado Christian remain the most by a GNAC player in a 3-setter this year … Jr. OH Brooke Pottle ranks third on the team in both kills (2.26 kps) and digs (2.61 dps), notching a career-high 16 kills and posting her fifth double-double of the season against WWU last week  … the transfer from Glendale (Ariz.) College had her sixth double-digit kills performance against the Vikings as well … Pottle — who played at Div. I Air Force as a freshman — also has 12 matches with double-digit digs … another JC transfer, Jr. L Quinn Barker is quickly rising up UAA’s single-season digs list, moving into 10th place last week with 460 overall, and leapfrogging into 3rd place in digs-per-set average at 4.65 … the Southern Californian ranks 4th in the GNAC overall stats as well … Barker has topped the 20-dig plateau nine times so far, and she was an all-tournament selection at both the UCSD and SpringHill Suites invitationals … Fr. MB Erin Braun gives the Seawolves four players in the top 20 of the GNAC’s attack pct. rankings, currently checking in 5th with a .307 mark — also good for 5th on UAA’s single-season list … the Southern Californian rose to 11th in blocks per set (0.98) after posting a career-high 9 against Simon Fraser … Jr. RS Maureen Sabado has delivered at least three kills in every match this season, including a career-high-tying 10 on .688 hitting in the road sweep of Simon Fraser.
