’WOLVES GO 1-3 AT UCSD: The Seawolves started with a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Cal Poly Pomona, before dropping their final three contests at the UC San Diego Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., Sept. 13-14 … in their first 5-setter of the year, five different Seawolves reached double digits in kills, including 14 apiece for Sr. MB Jodi Huddleston and So. OH Katelynn Zanders, while Jr. OH Brooke Pottle notched her first double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs … against 18th-ranked Cal State San Bernardino, Zanders had 11 kills on career-high .500 hitting, but it wasn’t enough in a 3-0 loss … on Saturday, UAA rallied for a 2-1 lead against Cal State Dominguez Hills before the Toros regrouped to win 15-6 in the 5th … Zanders had 20 kills in the loss, So. RS Julia Mackey added 15 kills, and Jr. L Quinn Barker — who was named to the all-tournament team — matched her own UAA season-high with 25 digs … in the finale, Pottle led the way with 8 kills in a 3-0 loss to host and 13th-ranked UC San Diego.
LAST TIME AT THE FARG: The Seawolves completed a busy stretch with five matches in five days, Sept. 5-9, finishing with a 4-1 record … in the team’s annual SpringHill Suites Invitational, UAA opened by winning nine of 10 sets against American International, Texas A&M Kingsville and Notre Dame de Namur, before falling in four sets to Augustana in the finale … UAA outhit its opponents .207 to .135 and led the event with 2.46 blocks per set … the Seawolves put three players — Sr. MB Jodi Huddleston, So. OH Julia Mackey and Jr. L Quinn Barker — on the All-Tournament Team, with Huddleston posting a tourney-best 1.54 blocks per set … on Monday, UAA concluded its non-conference home schedule with a sweep of 2012 NCAA participant Colorado College, outblocking the Cougars 15-4 … So. OH Katelynn Zanders delivered team-highs of 10 kills and 11 digs in the win, while Huddleston came up with a career-high nine total blocks.
TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves are now 42-8 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex since 2009; UAA has not lost consecutive home matches under head coach Chris Green, who took over in 2008 … the Seawolves’ losses to Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego dropped them to 8-24 overall against ranked opponents under Green; prior to Green’s arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes … the Seawolves rank No. 2 in attack percentage (.212) and No. 3 in assists per set (12.19) in the early Great Northwest Athletic Conference team stats.
’WOLF BITES: So. OH Katelynn Zanders reached the 20-kill mark for the second time in her career and posted her team-leading third double-double of the season with 20 kills and 13 digs in UAA’s 3-2 loss to CSU Dominguez Hills … Zanders leads UAA and ranks 8th in the GNAC with 3.07 kills per set, while she is third on the team and 17th in the league with 2.60 digs per set … Zanders also reached a career-high with a .500 attack pct. (11 kills-1 error-20 attacks) against CSU San Bernardino … Sr. MB Jodi Huddleston spearheaded the offense with a UAA season-best .619 attack pct. (14-1-21) in the win over Cal Poly Pomona … the reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year currently ranks 6th in the league in both attack pct. (.306) and blocks per set (1.15) … in UAA’s five home matches thus far, Huddleston has racked up 29 total blocks, including a career-high nine total and eight block assists vs. Colorado Christian … So. RS Julia Mackey ranks 10th in kills (3.00 kps) and 18th in attack pct. (.225) in the GNAC stats … the reigning GNAC co-Freshman of the Year has notched double-digit kills six times, including 15 in the loss to Dominguez Hills and 12 in the win over Pomona last week … Sr. S/DS Siobhan Johansen recently became the 13th player in program history to dish 1,000 assists, passing the milestone against Chaminade … the Palmer (Colony HS) product has played in nearly every set of her career, ranking in the program’s top 20 in assists (12th, 1,236), assists per set (13th, 3.71) and digs (19th, 832) … Johansen dished a UAA season-high 39 assists in the win over Pomona, along with 15 digs … Jr. OH Brooke Pottle has made an impressive debut in her first three weeks, ranking second on the team and 16th in the GNAC with 2.63 dps … the transfer from Glendale (Ariz.) College has a pair of double-digit kills performances thus far, including her first career double-double with 12 kills-12 digs vs. Pomona … Pottle — who played at Div. I Air Force as a freshman — also has four matches with double-digit digs … another JC transfer, Jr. L Quinn Barker has taken over on the back row, ranking 4th in the GNAC with 4.55 digs per set … Barker has topped the 20-dig plateau three times, including 25 against Dominguez Hills and 22 against Pomona … Barker has been an all-tournament selection at both the UCSD and SpringHill Suites invitationals … Fr. MB Erin Braun has made an immediate impact, posting GNAC top-15 ranks in attack pct. (9th, .294) and blocking (11th, 0.92 bps) … the Southern Californian more than doubled her previous best with 10 kills in the win over Pomona, along with 5 total blocks … Fr. S Morgan Hooe — the 2011 Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year at South Anchorage HS — has been solid in her role splitting setting duties with Johansen thus far, averaging 4.31 assists and 1.86 digs per set … Hooe dished 26 assists and made 10 digs in the win over Pomona last week … Jr. MB Maureen Sabado is fourth on the Seawolves with both her .210 attack pct. and 1.61 kps.
