SCOUTING THE FIELD: All five visiting teams will be making their 2013 season debuts at the SpringHill Suites Invitational … American International is coming off a 16-14 season and a 7th-place finish in the Northeast-10 Conference … the Yellowjackets are from Springfield, Mass. … Augustana, from Sioux Falls, S.D., is aiming to improve on a 17-13 record, including a 11-9 mark in the powerful Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference … the Vikings will be led by All-American middle blocker Holly Hafemeyer (3.51 kps, .312 att%, 0.98 bps) … Claflin must replace several key players from last year’s team that went 19-9 overall, 12-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference … the Panthers hail from Orangeburg, S.C. … Notre Dame de Namur will be the fourth Pacific West Conference opponent for UAA thus far … the Argos, from Belmont, Calif., are coming off a 1-24 season that saw them go winless in the PWC … Texas A&M Kingsville went 17-14 in 2012 and was picked to repeat its 6th-place finish in this year’s Lone Star Conference preseason poll … the Javelinas boast six returners from last season.

COUGARS AROUND THE CORNER: The Seawolves get one day off before hosting a stand-alone match against Colorado Christian on Monday at 5:30 p.m. … the Cougars — from the Denver suburb of Lakewood — are coming off a 23-10 season and the program’s first NCAA Tournament berth … picked 5th in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason poll, CCU will play three matches at the UAF tournament this weekend before heading south for their first-ever volleyball meeting against UAA.
HAWAII RECAP: The Seawolves finished 1-2 on their season-opening trip to Hawaii last week, dropping the rubber match in a sweep at Hawaii Hilo on Saturday … in the first match, UAA tested defending NCAA West Region champion BYU-Hawaii in the first, but eventually fell in three … So. RS Julia Mackey had 12 kills and Jr. OH Brooke Pottle tallied 8 kills and 7 digs against the 5th-ranked Seasiders … on Friday, UAA earned its first win with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-23 sweep of Chaminade in Honolulu … So. OH Katelynn Zanders ripped a match-high 12 kills, along with career-highs of 9 digs and 3 assists … Pottle had 10 kills — including the final two points of the match — and 8 digs, while Jr. L Quinn Barker tallied 14 digs … in the finale, the Seawolves could not take advantage of leads late in the first and second sets, getting outhit .349 to .265 by the Vulcans … Mackey led UAA with 11 kills on .310 hitting, Barker made 17 digs, and Sr. S Siobhan Johansen had 24 assists, 6 digs and a career-high 5 aces in the loss.
2013 OUTLOOK: The Seawolves, picked to finished third in the GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, return seven players — including five starters and a libero — from their 2012 squad … among the top returners are reigning GNAC co-Freshman of the Year and All-GNAC right-side hitter Julia Mackey, reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year and honorable mention all-league middle blocker Jodi Huddleston, and last year’s kills leader, outside hitter Katelynn Zanders, who averaged 3.18 kps.
BRIEF 2012 SEASON RECAP: The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team extended the program record with its fifth straight winning season, finishing 16-10 overall … the Seawolves went 11-7 for 4th place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, marking their fourth consecutive winning record and top-4 league finish … the Seawolves put together a 5-match win streak in September capture their own SpringHill Suites Invitational championship, and they forged a 5-2 mark in October … individually, UAA produced the GNAC’s Newcomer of the Year with then-junior MB Jodi Huddleston, while OH Julia Mackey shared the league’s Freshman of the Year award … Mackey and Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi were both voted to the All-GNAC Team, with Huddleston gaining honorable-mention status.
TEAM NOTES: The Seawolves are 38-7 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex since 2009; UAA has not lost consecutive home matches under head coach Chris Green, who took over in 2008 … last year’s team ranked No. 3 in the GNAC in four of the seven main stats categories — aces per set (1.56), kills per set (12.82), assists per set (11.97) and opponent attack pct. (.167) … the Seawolves’ loss at BYUH dropped them to 8-22 overall against ranked opponents under Green; prior to Green’s arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes.
’WOLF BITES: So. RS Julia Mackey led UAA in kills in two of the three Hawaii matches, tallying double digits against BYU-Hawaii (12) and Hawaii Hilo (11) … So. OH Katelynn Zanders smashed 11 of her 12 kills against Chaminade in the opening two sets of Friday’s win … Zanders has shown an improved all-around game, twice topping her previous career-high of 7 digs … Sr. S/DS Siobhan Johansen became the 13th player in program history to dish 1,000 assists, passing the milestone against Chaminade … the Palmer (Colony HS) product has played in nearly every set of her career, also ranking in the program’s top 20 in digs (20th, 762) and assists per set (13th, 3.44) … So. MB Maureen Sabado put up UAA’s best attack percentage of the opening week and matched her career-high with .385 (7-2-13) hitting against Hawaii Hilo … Jr. OH Brooke Pottle made an impressive debut last week as the Glendale (Ariz.) College transfer averaged 2.67 kills and 2.33 digs per set, including several clutch plays in the win over Chaminade … Pottle, who played at Div. I Air Force as a freshman, had the go-ahead and match-point kills in the 25-23 clincher against the Silverswords … another JC transfer, Jr. L Quinn Barker has taken over on the back row, lifting 5.33 digs per set … the former Central Arizona standout twice tallied 17 digs last week … Fr. MB Erin Braun leads UAA with 1.00 blocks per set after three matches and has the team’s second-best attack percentage at .227 … another newcomer, Fr. S Morgan Hooe has split setting duties with Johansen thus far, averaging 3.44 assists and 1.67 digs per set.
