ANCHORAGE – Junior Emily Petersen was named the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team’s 2013 MVP on Thursday night as the Seawolves celebrated a record-setting season with their year-end banquet at Lone Star Steakhouse.

Petersen helped the Seawolves set 17 team records – including team season average records for vault, uneven bars, balance beam and total score – while posting six individual victories throughout the season. The Indianapolis native earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s highest regional qualifying score on balance beam with a 9.785, and was also an All-MPSF honoree on uneven bars with a 9.675 RQS. Earlier Thursday, she was one of three Seawolves recognized on the MPSF All-Academic Team with a squad-high 3.93 overall grade-point average.

Awards were also given for the highest individual averages on each apparatus, with freshman M’rcy Matsunami taking the prize on vault (9.734) and bars (9.686), along with a school-record 38.539 in the all-around. Petersen’s 9.678 average barely edged sophomore Morgan Cook on beam, while Cook took top honors on floor at 9.560.

Petersen's MVP honor was chosen by a vote of teammates and coaches.
