INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball team has premiered at No. 8 in the season’s initial West Region rankings, released Wednesday by the NCAA.

With a 13-5 record against Division II competition, UAA is currently in the final position to reach the NCAA West Regional Championships, which will take postseason tournament winners from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, California Collegiate Athletic Association and Pacific West Conference, along with the next five highest-ranked teams.

The Seawolves join top-ranked Western Washington (21-0 vs D-II) and No. 3 Seattle Pacific (17-3) to represent in the GNAC in this week’s poll. WWU, SPU and regionally 2nd-ranked Cal Poly Pomona are all among the top five in this week’s NCAA Div. II national rankings as well.

UAA has a chance to move up in the final two weeks of the regular season as it hosts WWU on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex (7:30 p.m. AST) and travels to SPU on Feb. 28. Chaminade (14-5), of the Pac West, currently sits seventh in the region.

The regional rankings will be released the next two Wednesdays – Feb. 27 and Mar. 6 – before the NCAA selection committee announces the playoff fields on Sunday, Mar. 10.

Before hosting their home finale against WWU, the Seawolves return to action Thursday against Simon Fraser (7:30 p.m.) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
