SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS: The Mavericks, who have won 11 of the last 14 games, enter the series with UAA after being swept by Wisconsin (4-3, 2-1), Jan. 11-12 ... prior to the series with the Badgers, MSU had put together a four-game winning streak with wins over Brown and Connecticut and a sweep over Providence ... MSU also furnished a season-high seven-game winning streak from Nov. 23-Dec. 14 that included a sweep over UAA ... the Mavericks are led by sophomore F Matt Leitner (9-18–27), sophomore F Jean-Paul Lafronaine (6-15–21) and senior F Eriah Hayes (12-7–19) ... dressing in 18 games between the pipes is freshman Stephon Williams (11-6-1, .925 sv%, 1.84 gaa) ... head coach Mike Hastings is in his first year with MSU.
LAST TIME vs. MINNESOTA STATE: The Seawolves were swept for the first time of the season at Minnesota State, Dec. 7-8 … the Mavericks pulled out a 3-1 win on Friday and a 3-0 shutout on Saturday ... on Friday, the Seawolves struck first for the third straight game, but MSU came back with three unanswered goals ... on Saturday, the Mavericks used two goals in the second frame and one in the third for the WCHA sweep ... the lone UAA goal of the weekend was scored by junior F Matt Bailey with assists going to sophomore F Kory Roy and senior D Scott Warner.
LAST TIME OUT: The Seawolves entertain the Mavericks following a sweep by the No.1-ranked Minnesota Gophers on Jan. 11-12 in Minneapolis, Minn. ... on Friday, the Seawolves led 3-2 in the final six minutes of play before one of the top power-play teams in the country used two man advantage strikes late in the game for the WCHA win ... the Seawolves received goals from junior D/F Quinn Sproule, senior F Daniel Naslund and sophomore F Scott Allen ... on Saturday, the Gophers used two goals apiece in the first and second and three in the third for the league sweep that included a Kyle Rau hat trick ... the lone UAA goal was tallied by junior F Matt Bailey.
KWAS REINSTATED TO JUNIOR STATUS: Following an NCAA appeal, forward Jordan Kwas has been reinstated to junior eligibility status ... prior to winning the appeal, Kwas was believed to have exhausted a year of eligibility in juniors.
SEAWOLF BITES: The sweep by Minnesota was the Seawolves’ fourth straight and it gave UAA an eight-game losing streak …UAA’s last win was Dec. 1 vs. then-No. 14/15 St. Cloud State … on Jan. 11, UAA gave the Gophers their closest game in their current five-game winning streak ... UAA also scored the first goal of the game -- first time since Dec. 7 vs. Minnesota State and just the 8th time this season ... UAA is 3-4-1 when scoring first and 0-9-3 when opponent scores first ... the Seawolves posted a season-high 12 shots on goal in the first period at UM ... UAA allowed three Gopher power-play goals on Friday and two on Saturday, breaking an 11-game streak where they kept opponents to one or fewer ... the only other time an opponent scored 3+ PPG on the Seawolves was Minnesota (4-6) on Nov. 9 … after the OT game on Nov. 30, the Seawolves have played in five games that have gone into sudden death, going 0-1-4 ... Sproule leads UAA defensemen with 2-3–5 totals, with just the one tally coming as a forward ... picking up his third goal of the season on Friday night was senior F Daniel Naslund, his second in four games ... breaking a six-game goalless streak was sophomore F Scott Allen with his team-leading 8th tally of the season ... Allen (8-2–10), who was named to the Kendall Hockey Classic all-tournament team, has easily bypassed his goal total from his rookie campaign (3) ... Allen also leads UAA with a .267 scoring percentage, placing 30 shots on net ... with an assist on Allen’s goal, rookie F Blake Tatchell owns a team-high-tying 12 points ... Tatchell (3-9–12), from North Battleford, Sask., is currently tied for No. 31 in the nation for rookies in points per game (.60) and tied for No. 9 in the WCHA (.56) ... on Saturday, the lone UAA tally was netted by junior F Matt Bailey … with the goal, Bailey is tied with Tatchell with 12 points … Bailey leads all current UAA skaters with 49 career points … Bailey, from Oakbank, Manitoba, has scored at least one point in nine games this season, including two multi-point games ... Tatchell leads UAA by scoring at least one point in 10 of the 20 games this season ... sophomore F Kory Roy and freshman D Chris Williams assisted on the Bailey’s goal – Roy’s seventh of the season, easily bypassing his rookie campaign, and Williams’ first collegiate point ... both are still searching for their first collegiate goal ... in the midst of a 8-game scoreless streak is senior F Alex Gellert, matching UAA’s current 8-game losing streak ... Gellert is fifth on the team with eight points and has five goals – already bypassing his goal total from any of his previous campaigns ... junior F Jordan Kwas posted two goals and an assist on Jan. 4 for his first career three-point game ... Kwas’ first tally was on the man advantage, giving him a team-high three PPG this season ... Kwas also leads all current UAA skaters with 8 PPG, having just 14 career even-strength tallies.
INJURY UPDATE: Junior F Brett Cameron fractured his collarbone on Nov. 23 against Bemidji State and is still on the inactive list.
