SCOUTING THE BRUINS: Coming off a 27-win season and an NCAA Tournament berth, Belmont has gotten off to a fast start again with three straight victories, including a 70-62 road upset of Stanford on Sunday night … entering its first season in the Ohio Valley Conference, the Nashville, Tenn., program is led by 6-1 Sr. G Kerron Johnson (17.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.3 apg, 2.0 spg) and 6-3 Sr. G Ian Clark (17.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, .514 FG, .500 3FG).

SEAWOLVES HANDLE SHOCK: The Seawolves stayed perfect on the young season with a pair of wins over NCAA Div. II independent Washington Adventist, beating the Shock 71-58 on Nov. 15 and 87-56 on Nov. 17 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex … in the first game, Jr. G Colton Lauwers scored 11 of his career-high 16 points (4-6 3FG) in the first half as UAA built a 20-point halftime lead and hung on … the Seawolves also got 14 points on perfect shooting (4-4 FG, 3-3 3FG, 3-3 FT) from Jr. G Kyle Fossman, while Sr. F Abebe Demissie tallied 12 points (4-8 FG) … Lauwers also dished a career-high 5 assists, and So. G Teancum Stafford reached double figures for the third straight game with 10 points … on Saturday, Fossman and Sr. C Liam Gibcus combined for 41 points as UAA outshot the visitors from Maryland 62 percent to 29 percent … Fossman had 21 points (6-7 FG, 3-4 3FG, 6-6 FT), 3 assists and a career-high 3 steals, while Gibcus scored 20 points (9-12 FG) and dished a pair of assists with no turnovers in 28 minutes … Demissie was the only other Seawolf to reach double figures with 10 points, although six others tallied at least five … Fr. PG Jalen Little dished a UAA season-best 8 assists, while Fr. F Collin Spickerman had 3 blocks for the second straight game.

UAA’s 9 blocks in Thursday’s win were the most for a Seawolf squad since Dec. 20, 2005 (vs Walla Walla) and just two shy of the program single-game record … Saturday’s 87-56 win over Washington Adventist marked UAA’s 18th straight victory when scoring 80 points or more, dating to start of the 2011-12 season … the Seawolves have now won 21 of their last 22 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, with the only loss coming to eventual NCAA champ Western Washington last season.

PLAYER NOTES: A Preseason All-GNAC selection, Jr. G Kyle Fossman has responded to expectations with 4-game averages of 18.0 ppg (.600 FG, .571 3FG, .889 FT), 3.8 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.8 spg … with 24 of 27 free throws made, the Haines product has already nearly equaled his 27-of-31 production from last year … by going 6 of 7 last week, Fossman has overtaken former all-conference performer Kemmy Burgess (.474, 2003-06) as UAA’s career 3FG% leader, currently at .479 … he is also tied for 22nd in 3FGs made (91), needing three more to move into UAA’s top 20 … after backing up All-American Taylor Rohde the past two seasons, Sr. C Liam Gibcus is coming into his own as a starter, averaging 9.5 ppg and 4.8 rpg, while shooting a team-high .607 FG% ... the Aussie shot 11 of 16 last week to move up to No. 8 UAA’s career FG% list at .558 … the team’s only 4th-year senior also stands 22nd in games played (87) and tied for 11th in games won (65), needing two more victories to reach the top 10 … So. G Teancum Stafford has made an immediate impact since transferring from Snow (Utah) College, averaging 13.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 2.5 apg … Stafford was the MVP of the season-opening AT&T Jamboree after scoring 23 points and grabbing 7 rebounds against CSU-Pueblo … Jr. G Colton Lauwers and Fr. G Jalen Little have complemented each other well at the point, combining to average 15.3 ppg, 6.0 apg, .421 3FG and .833 FT … Jr. G Mike MacKelvie is the only Seawolf averaging at least 5.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, leading the team with 5.0 rpg … the Eastern Arizona transfer is second on the squad in both assists (3.8 apg) and steals (1.3 spg).

INJURY REPORT: The Seawolves enter the Shootout with no significant injuries.

2011 SHOOTOUT RECAP: The Seawolves won at least one game in their own Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout for the fourth straight year, knocking off UC Irvine, 77-63 on Nov. 26, after losing to eventual tourney champ Murray State (64-62) and Dartmouth (64-52) at Sullivan Arena … in the first game, UAA hung tough with the eventual Ohio Valley Conference champions behind 19 points and 6 rebounds from Taylor Rohde, plus 5 assists and a career-high 14 points from Steve WhiteTravis Thompson added 8 points and a career-high 4 assists, while then-Jr. F Abebe Demissie had 8 points in his Seawolf debut … after going to the half tied at 25 against Dartmouth, the Seawolves shot just 27.3 percent in the second half and lost their first-ever game against an Ivy League school … on Saturday, UAA overcame a 44-42 halftime deficit to outscore UC Irvine 35-19 over the final 20 minutes … Thompson had 13 points (3-6 3FG), 4 assists and 4 steals, Demissie delivered 13 points (4-6 FG, 3-5 3FG), 9 rebounds and 3 assists, and Lonnie Ridgeway had 11 points (5-8 FG).

LOOK OUT, GOLIATH: Entering this year’s Shootout, Division II UAA owns a 53-134 all-time record against Division I opponents (regular season only) … the Seawolves’ biggest upset came during the 1988-89 campaign when they beat then-No. 2 and undefeated Michigan, 70-66, at the Utah Seiko Classic; the Wolverines went on to win the NCAA title that year ... with the UC Irvine win in 2011-12, UAA has now beaten at least one Division I school in 25 of the last 27 seasons.

The Seawolves, the only Division II team and the only school to appear in every Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, sport a 33-69 (.324) all-time mark in the tournament, including 11-19 since 2002 … the Seawolves have won at least one game in 28 of the 34 Shootouts, including a current string of four straight … UAA won at least one game in 13 straight Shootouts from 1985-97 … UAA’s best finish has been 4th place, accomplished six times (1986, 1987, 1991, 2003, 2009, 2010), although the 2009 finish came in a 6-team field … UAA has pulled first-round upsets four times (Maine 1996, Wake Forest 1993, Texas Tech 1990, and Pacific 1979) … UAA’s other Shootout victims are Auburn (1989), Ball State (2010), Canisius (2003), Dayton (1992), Grambling State (1999), High Point (2004), Houston Baptist (2010), Idaho (1991), Iona (1988), Jackson State (1994), Louisiana Tech (2008), Miami, Fla.
