UAA joins support of tornado victims
The University of Alaska Anchorage is teaming with the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association to raise money for the city of Joplin, Mo. - the host of the 2012 NCAA Div. II Cross Country Championships - which was devastated by an EF-5 Tornado in May of 2011.
Collectively, NCAA Division II is looking to raise $150,000 to be divided between the Joplin School District Fund and the Missouri Southern Tornado Relief Fund as Joplin had over 8,000 schools, homes, and businesses leveled, while 160 lives were claimed.
The Seawolf cross country running teams will be introduced at the UAA vs Montana State Billings volleyball match, Nov. 8 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex before collecting money throughout the crowd. There will also be a table on the mezzanine level to explain the initiative and collect donations.
The running squads will also collect donations at the UAA vs. Minnesota hockey game, Nov. 9 at the Sullivan Arena.
Donations can be made at the events, in person at the UAA Athletics Office, room 220 of the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, or online by clicking here. (Online donations will require donors to create a login and password)
Led by the first-place finishes of Susan Tanui in the women's race and Micah Chelimo at the men's race at last week's NCAA Regionals in Hawaii, UAA Head Coach Michael Friess' teams posted second-place team finishes in both races and both will compete in the NCAA national championships, Nov. 17 in Joplin.
