SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS: Western Washington had won seven straight matches — all by sweeps — before losing in three sets at Western Oregon on Thursday … the Vikings, who bounced back with a 4-set win at Saint Martin’s on Saturday, are led by Sr. OH Marlayna Geary (4.32 kps, .302 att%, 3.07 dps), Sr. S Laurie Yearout (12.12 aps, 1.61 dps, 0.51 bps) and So. MB Kayla Erickson (3.24 kps, .361 att%, 1.11 bps) … as a team, WWU leads the GNAC in kills (14.03 kps), attack pct. (.272), assists (13.42 aps) and digs (17.19 dps), and is 6-0 at home this year … Simon Fraser has dropped three straight since earning its first Div. II victory of the season in a 5-set home win Oct. 18 against NW Nazarene … the Clan, who also played Central Washington to a 5-set loss recently, are led by So. OH Jessica Young (2.83 kps, .116 att%, 2.25 dps) and So. MB Amanda Renkema (2.00 kps, .213 att%, 0.84 bps).

LAST TIME VS WWU & SFU: The Seawolves ran their overall home winning streak to 16 with a 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 sweep of Simon Fraser on Oct. 4, before falling 19-25, 19-25, 18-25 to then-No. 16 Western Washington on Oct. 6 … Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders had 17 kills — a UAA season-high for a 3-setter — on .375 hitting as the Seawolves improved to 5-0 all-time against the Clan … Fr. OH Julia Mackey hit a match-high .409 with 12 kills, Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston connected for 8 kills at a .389 pct., and Fr. MB Breanne Sytnyk had a career-high 4 blocks … Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi had 40 assists, 8 digs, 2 kills and 2 aces, and Jr. L Siobhan Johansen made an impressive 24 digs in the win … Saturday’s first-place showdown went to the visitors from Bellingham as UAA suffered its first home loss since Sept. 8, 2011 (vs W. Oregon) and its first home sweep since Sept. 18, 2009 (vs MSUB) … Zanders and Mackey tied for team-high honors with 9 kills, while Huddleston and Sytnyk notched 6 apiece … Jafroudi had 30 assists and 12 digs, and Johansen managed 18 digs and a season-high 5 assists.

UAF RECAP: Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders ripped 17 kills and Fr. OH Julia Mackey had 15 kills, including match point, to lift UAA to a 25-20, 23-25,29-27, 18-25, 15-13 victory at Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday ... the Seawolves also got 54 assists, 11 digs and 3 blocks from Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi as they extended their win streak to five against their oldest rivals … Fr. OH Sarah Johnson added 12 kills and 14 digs to earn her team-high 8th double-double, including two against UAF, while Jr. L Siobhan Johansen was solid along the back row as well, with a career- and team-season-high 32 digs … UAA earned the 5th-set win after trailing late, 12-10 and 13-12, and scoring the last three points of the match … UAA’s 5 straight victories mark its longest streak against UAF since winning 9 straight from 1987-90 … UAA now leads 60-34 overall against UAF and 25-22 at the Patty Center.

TEAM NOTES: With their victory over UAF, the Seawolves clinched their unprecedented 5th straight winning season and at least a .500 record in the league, with six matches remaining … the Seawolves improved to 5-0 in 5-set matches this year with Saturday’s victory … UAA is 9-2 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex this season after having a 16-match home winning streak stopped Oct. 6 against  Western Washington … the Seawolves have won 34 of their last 38 home matches and are 37-6 at the WFSC since 2009 … UAA has not lost consecutive home matches under head coach Chris Green, who took over in 2008 … UAA is 12-0 when posting a higher hitting pct. and 9-1 when outblocking its opponents … the Seawolves rank No. 2 in the GNAC in five of the seven main stats categories — digs per set (16.3), aces per set (1.5), kills per set (13.0), assists per set (12.1) and opponent attack pct. (.159) — and are No. 3 in attack pct. (.211) … by going the distance against CWU, NNU and UAF, the Seawolves accomplished a program-first by winning three straight home matches by 3-2 scores … the 884 fans Sept. 29 against UAF and the 862 against WOU on Oct. 20 were the top two crowds in program history, while the 785 against WWU on Oct. 6 ranks 7th on the list of largest volleyball attendances at UAA … the Seawolves are 8-20 overall against ranked opponents under head coach Chris Green; prior to Green’s arrival in 2008, UAA had lost 32 straight matches to ranked foes.

’WOLF NOTES: Reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year and 2nd-Team all-league Sr. S Kimya Jafroudi ranks 2nd in the league and 19th nationally with 10.91 assists per set … she also paces the GNAC with 0.48 aces per set, good for 49th in Div. II and No. 7 on UAA’s single-season list … currently with 1,748 career assists, the Californian needs just 10 more to pass Ann Twiggs (1983-86) for 6th place on the all-time UAA list … Jafroudi is narrowly behind former GNAC Player-of-the-Year Calli Scott (2008-09) for No. 1 on UAA’s career assists average record, trailing 10.62 to 10.53; with six matches remaining, she would need to average 42 assists per outing to reach 2,000 … in September, Jafroudi was the MVP of UAA’s own SpringHill Suites Invitational, pacing a Seawolf offense that hit .241 … Fr. OH Sarah Johnson has shown off her all-around skills early in her career, currently ranking 15th in the GNAC in kills per set (2.65) and 13th in digs per set (3.01) … she leads the Seawolves with eight double-doubles, including a 24-kill, 24-dig performance in the 3-2 home win over UAF … Johnson was the GNAC Red Lion Offensive Player of the Week for Sept. 10-16 after posting a .308 attack pct. and averages of 3.40 kills and 3.20 digs in wins over CWU and NNU … with Johnson, Fr. OH Katelynn Zanders (6th, 3.39 kps) and Fr. OH Julia Mackey (9th, 3.05 kps), the Seawolves have three of the GNAC’s top 15 leaders in kills per set … midway through her rookie campaign, Zanders is 14th on UAA’s single-season list for kills average … Mackey has delivered double-digit kills in 15 of 20 matches thus far, while Zanders has done it 13 times … Jr. MB Jodi Huddleston leads the Seawolves and ranks 6th in the GNAC with a .309 attack pct. … the Western Nebraska transfer has connected at .300 or better in 10 of 20 matches, while hitting below .200 only twice … Fr. MB Breanne Sytnyk has a .348 attack percentage with 1.86 kills and 1.09 blocks per set over the last eight matches … the Canadian now ranks 13th in the GNAC with 0.78 blocks per set … Jr. L Siobhan Johansen has averaged 5.22 digs per set of the last seven matches, vaulting her to 6th in the GNAC and 4th on UAA’s single-season list with 4.55 dps … Johansen’s 32 digs at UAF were a career high and the most for a Seawolf since Quincy Haught’s 32 in a 5-set win over Central Washington, Nov. 5, 2011 … Sr. OH/DS Nikkie Viotto ranks in UAA’s career top 20 in five categories — total aces (7th, 112), aces per set (11th, .300), total digs (17th, 856), sets played (14th, 373) and matches played (17th, 101) … after playing mainly as a serving specialist last year, So. DS Jordan Bush has stepped up her role, playing in all 75 sets and ranking 5th on the team with 1.76 dps … Bush’s ace-to-error ratio of 19-10 is easily best on the team, and she ranks 17th in the GNAC with 0.25 aces per set.

SEAWOLVES PICKED 3RD IN POLL: The Seawolves were tabbed for third place in the 2012 GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Aug. 21 … UAA received 70 points in the balloting, narrowly trailing Western Washington and Western Oregon:
