SALEM, Ore. – The Alaska Anchorage men’s and women’s track & field team completed Day 1 of the Willamette Invitational with 11 top-10 finishes on Friday at the Charles Bowles Track.
Leading the Seawolf pack with a first-place showing in the men’s 1500 meters was senior Alfred Kangogo. A local of Eldoret, Kenya, Kangogo posted a time of 3 minutes, 53.61 seconds for the win. Also competing in the same heat was junior Micah Chelimo, finishing fifth at 3:55.54.
Racing in heat B of the 1500 meters was Alfred’s younger brother, Isaac Kangogo, who finished fifth with a personal-best time of 3:57.69. Freshmen Dylan Anthony was ninth in 4:00.56, while Kevin Rooke was 10th in 4:00.95.
In the men’s pole vault, senior Micah Johnson posted a jump of 13 feet, 6.25 inches for fourth place. Johnson holds the UAA record in the event at 13-7.25.
On the women’s side, picking up a season-best and winning time of 4:31.91 in the 1500 meters was sophomore Ivy O'Guinn. Junior Miriam Kipng'eno (4:37.44) and freshman Susan Tanui (4:38.06) were fourth and sixth, respectively.
Senior Hallidie Wilt produced a podium finish, completing the 5,000-meter race in a personal-best time of 17:06.14.
Rookie Jaymi Bethea posted a personal-best time in heat B of the 1500 meters, crossing the finish line at 4:49.66, good for 10th place.
