INDIANAPOLIS – Both University of Alaska Anchorage basketball teams will make return trips to their respective NCAA Division II national tournaments as the 64-team fields were unveiled here Sunday evening.

The nationally 11th-ranked Seawolf men (25-5, 16-2) qualified via an automatic berth as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion and will be host and top seed for the 8-team West Region Championships. UAA will take on California Collegiate Athletic Association postseason tournament champion and No. 8 seed UC San Diego (18-11, 11-9) in the first round.

The tournament will be held Mar. 14, 15 and 17 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on the UAA campus. Click here for ticket information.

Meanwhile, the 7th-ranked UAA women (26-4, 15-3) earned an at-large berth for the second straight year and will be the No. 3 seed. The women’s West Region Championship will be held on the same dates at Seattle Pacific’s Royal Brougham Pavilion. UAA, the GNAC runner-up, will take on No. 6 seed Sonoma State (20-8, 13-7), who finished fourth in the CCAA, in Friday’s first round.

On the men’s side, the Seawolves are making their third consecutive trip to NCAAs and 14th in the program’s 31-year history. This marks the first time UAA has earned a No. 1 seed. The Seawolves’ furthest advancement was in 1988 when they lost the Division II national title game to Massachusetts-Lowell.

UAA’s women are making their eighth NCAA appearance and their first in consecutive seasons since 1988 and 1989. The Seawolves were a No. 4 seed last year when they beat Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first round before losing to top-seeded UC San Diego. UAA’s farthest advancement was the round of 16 in 1988.
