FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – Alaska Fairbanks defeated Alaska Anchorage 2-1 in the second game of the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup Saturday. The series is tied 1-1 as UAA won game one 4-1 Friday.
"We knew it was going to be another battle tonight, and we unfortunately came up a bit short," said head coach Matt Curley. "I thought we came out a bit flat in the first and despite getting things going in the second we were not able to sustain it. But at the end of the day we came up here to get one on the road, and we did that and it sets things up for a great ending to the regular season."
For the second time this weekend, the Nanooks got on the board first when Kyle Marino buried a rebound at 7:01 of the first period.
Carmine Buono fired a slap shot from the slot to tie the game at 1-1 58 seconds into the second period. Nils Rygaard collected an assist on the goal.
Ryker Leer scored the game winner with a high wrist shot at 2:50 of the third period.
UAA finished 1-for-2 on the powerplay and held UAF scoreless on five powerplay chances and held the Nanooks scoreless on all nine of their opportunities on the weekend.
Fairbanks led 27-17 in shots.
Kristian Stead finished with 25 saves.
Alaska Anchorage will host Ferris State Feb. 15-16.
