ANCHORAGE – Sophomore Isabelle Fox scored a career-high 38.850 all-around Sunday and junior Sophia Hyderally excelled on three events to lead the Alaska Anchorage gymnastics team to a 192.350 to 189.275 victory over Illinois State at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (1-1) also used a solid three-even effort from junior Kennedy Green as they avenged Friday’s loss and beat Illinois State for the first time in eight all-time meetings.

The Redbirds (1-1) were led by a 38.325 all-around from Gabrielle Cooke, who claimed individual wins on vault with a 9.8 and floor exercise with a 9.85.

“That was a terrific performance today. I’m really proud of how we responded after a tough opening night on Friday,” said UAA head coach Tanya Ho, whose squad topped its best total of 2018 and set a program record for highest score in the month of January. “Isabelle and Sophia were great anchors in our lineup today, but it was a full team effort to achieve this kind of score this early in the year.”

Despite having just five vaulters in the lineup, the Seawolves got off to a virtually insurmountable lead in the opening rotation, outscoring the Redbirds 47.925 to 44.350 as the visitors struggled on uneven bars. Fox led the way with a 9.7, while Green posted a 9.65 and freshman Ali Marvel a 9.6.

Hyderally kept the momentum going with a winning 9.675 on uneven bars to begin her evening, while Fox and junior Mackenzie Miller tallied 9.625s to give UAA a sweep of the top three on that apparatus.

UAA kept its advantage steady through each rotation as Hyderally and Fox placed second and third on beam, helping the Seawolves match the 24th-best total in program history at 48.250. Hyderally’s 9.825 marked the second-best score of her career, while Fox posted a 9.8 and sophomore Hope Nelson a 9.7.

The Seawolves finished in style on floor exercise, getting a 9.825 from Fox, a 9.8 from Hyderally and a 9.75 from Miller. UAA’s 48.625 total was the 10th-best floor score in program history and its best since March 2016.

The Seawolves return to action with a pair of meets next week against Brown University in the main arena at the Alaska Airlines Center. Friday’s meet begins at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s at 2 p.m. Call 907-786-1562 or visit GoSeawolves.com or AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
