NEW ORLEANS – Emmah Chelimo and Michael Friess of the University of Alaska Anchorage were named the USTFCCCA West Region Female Athlete of the Year and Women’s Coach of the Year.

Chelimo continued her perfect season with an individual victory at the West Regionals with a mark of 20:57.5. The junior from Iten, Kenya, became the sixth female athlete in UAA history to win an individual championship. She also won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships and is 5-for-5 in races this season. She paced the Seawolves to the regional title as well.

Friess, in his 29th year with the program, oversaw the UAA women win the West Regional title. The group scored 66 points for their fifth regional title in school history and had four All-Region honorees, including individual champion Emmah Chelimo. The team also won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships this year. This is the fifth time that Friess has been named the West Region Women’s Coach of the Year.

UAA had eight runners earn all-region honors; Emmah Chelimo, Nancy Jeptoo, Zennah Jepchumba, Danielle McCormick, Felix Kemboi, Wesley Kirui, Jorge Sanchez and Nickson Koech.

Both the UAA men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete at the NCAA Div. II Cross Country National Championships in Pittsburgh, Pa., Dec. 1.
