UAA also made it eight straight years with a winning Great Northwest Athletic Conference record – going 11-9 and finishing tied for 4th – and kept alive its streak of qualifying for every GNAC Tournament since it was founded in 2011 ... in addition to season sweeps of longtime rivals Alaska Fairbanks, MSU Billings, the Seawolves closed their 40-year Great Alaska Shootout history with another win over a Div. I program, beating Santa Clara in an overtime thriller.

UAA also led the league in FG% allowed (.419) and ranked 2nd in FT% (.746) ... last year’s team earned the program’s 13th straight winning season and the 35th in 41 years ... the Seawolves have earned eight straight winning GNAC records and qualified to the GNAC Tournament every year since its founding in 2011.

ALL-TIME vs UAV: UAA leads 1-0
Last: UAA 70, UAV 69 (11/4/17 at UAV) / Notes: In last year’s season opener in Lancaster, Calif., UAA trailed almost the entire contest before Maleke Haynes made the game-winning three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left ... Josiah Wood led UAA with 18 points in the first-ever meeting between the schools in any sport.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS: An NAIA Div. I program located in Lancaster, Calif., the University of Antelope Valley is the defending Cal Pac Conference regular-season and tournament champion ... coming off a 20-8 overall record and a berth in their national tournament, the Pioneers are led by 6-7 Sr. F Hayden Hall, who averaged 10.8 ppg and 3.5 rpg in 2017-18, shooting .429 from long range as his team’s second-leading scorer ... UAV opened with a 79-68 road loss to NAIA 23rd-ranked Warner Pacific on Tuesday.

LOOK WHO’S BACK: With four letterwinners returning, the Seawolves have just 27 percent of their scoring and 30 percent of their rebounding back from last year’s 15-14 squad ... Sr. F/C Brian Pearson is the most experienced Seawolf, with 63 career appearances and 23 starts ... Pearson had a breakout season last year, posting 7.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg and ranking 6th in the GNAC with 1.3 bpg ... Pearson begins the season in 9th place on UAA’s career blocks list with 57 ... Jr. G Jack Macdonald, So. G Brennan Rymer and So. F Eric Jenkins are all back for their second seasons in Green & Gold ... Rymer ranked 14th in the GNAC with a 1.7 assist/turnover ratio and 20th with 2.1 apg as a freshman ... UAA also gets a lift on the interior with the return of Jr. F Sjur Berg, who is back with the Seawolves after spending a sabbatical year at home in Norway ... with career averages of 3.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg, Berg has seen action in 58 games.

NEW KIDS ON THE SPOT: The Seawolves will look for big production from their cast of newcomers this season, led by a pair of players with Div. I experience ... Jr. G/F Tyler Brimhall is UAA’s representative on the Preseason All-GNAC Team and the lone newcomer to make that squad, coming north after helping North Idaho College to the NWAC title in 2017-18 ... Brimhall also spent two seasons at D-I Idaho, where he redshirted in 2015-16 ... Jr. F Niko Bevens took a similar path to UAA after playing as a freshman on North Idaho’s NWAC East Division title team and transfering to D-I Montana as a sophomore ... Bevens shot nearly 50 percent (110 of 221) from 3FG range as a freshman at NIC ... So. G Keenan Dowell is the latest international addition to UAA’s program, with the Canadian combo guard transfering from Sheridan (Wyo.) College, where he helped his team to a 28-5 mark as a true freshman ... after serving as team manager last year, Sr. G Matt Seymour has gained full playing eligibility and will suit up for the first time since playing at Whatcom (Wash.) CC from 2014-16 ... Seymour was his team’s 2nd-leading scorer and shot .436 from long range as a sophomore ... three freshmen also get their first shot at college ball, including the last two Alaska Gatorade Players of the Year with redshirt Fr. F Austin White (Ninilchik) and true Fr. G Tobin Karlberg (Anchorage/Grace Christian) ... Fr. G Travis Adams is just the second player from Barrow ever to suit up for the Seawolves, having helped the Whalers to three state titles in his four prep seasons.

TRUST IN RUSTY: Now in his 15th year at the helm, head coach Rusty Osborne (265-152) has led the Seawolves to 13 straight winning seasons, along with five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2008 NCAA D-II Semifinals … the longest tenured coach in program history and in the GNAC, he became the first UAA basketball coach to reach 200 career victories when the Seawolves beat Alaska Fairbanks on Jan. 10, 2015 … Osborne captured his first career GNAC and NABC West District coach-of-the-year awards in 2008 after becoming the second coach to lead UAA to three consecutive NCAA berths (2006-08), and in 2011-12 his Seawolves posted a 24-10 record to equal the 2nd-most victories in program history; Osborne’s 2007-08 club holds that record with a 29-6 mark … before taking over the head job in 2004-05, the Texas native previously served 13 seasons (1991-04) as a UAA assistant, including 11 years as the top assistant … the Seawolves have won over 60 percent of their games with Osborne on the staff, claiming four conference titles and eight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament ... Osborne is assisted by Ryan Orton (5th season) and Shane Rinner (7th season).

PICKED FOR 5TH: The Seawolves were predicted to finish 5th in the annual GNAC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released Oct. 23:
