CLEVELAND – For the 10th year in a row, the University of Alaska Anchorage’s combined sports programs have placed among the top 50 in the nation, finishing 42nd in the 2017-18 Learfield Directors’ Cup NCAA Div. II competition.

The final rankings were released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, following the conclusion of the last NCAA Spring Championships events. The annual rankings quantify the national success of all 305 NCAA Div. II programs.

With NCAA Championships appearances in six of their 12 possible sports, the Seawolves totaled 382.75 points in this year’s final Directors’ Cup standings. Ranked 19th after the Winter Championships season, UAA added 69.75 points for its 8th-place finish at the NCAA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships last month.

The Seawolves earned 182 points in their Winter sports, getting top-20 finishes from women’s basketball (regional semifinals, 64 pts), men’s and women’s skiing (9th place, 63 points) and women’s indoor track & field (17th, 55). UAA was 30th in the Fall standings, thanks national finishes from volleyball (1st Round) and women’s cross country (5th).

UAA finished second in the final standings among the 11 Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools – trailing only 30th-place Simon Fraser – and was sixth among the 38 programs that comprise the NCAA Div. II West Region.

Competing in its final season at the Div. II level, West Region program California Baptist earned 905 points to knock off perennial champion Grand Valley State (834.75) for this year’s overall title.

The Seawolves finished a school-record 8th place in 2015-16 and were 18th in last year’s Director’s Cup.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's NCAA finish in up to 14 sports – seven women’s and seven men’s.

UAA sponsors 13 sports – two of which, men’s and women’s skiing, have a combined national meet.
