INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of losses last week have knocked the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team down one notch to No. 9 in the latest NCAA Division II West Region rankings, released Wednesday.
With a 15-9 overall record against Div. II competition, the Seawolves are one of four Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams among the top nine in the West, along with No. 2 Northwest Nazarene (22-2), No. 3 Western Washington (21-3) and No. 6 Central Washington (18-6).
The Seawolves have faced eight of the other nine teams in the West Region rankings, finishing with a 3-8 record in those matches.
Nationally 2nd-ranked and unbeaten California Baptist remains No. 1, with fellow Pacific West Conference program Azusa Pacific (18-5) dropped to No. 5. California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Cal State San Bernardino (17-7) is No. 4, while a pair of CCAA programs – No. 7 Sonoma State (17-7) and No. 8 UC San Diego (16-7) – sit directly ahead of UAA in the race for the region’s final two playoff berths.
The GNAC and Pac West regular-season champions and CCAA Tournament champion receive automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament, along with the next five highest ranked teams at the conclusion of the season. The final regional poll will be released next Wednesday, followed by the announcement of the national playoff field on Nov. 19.
Currently fourth in the GNAC with an 11-5 league mark, the Seawolves play their final four regular-season matches at the Alaska Airlines Center, starting Thursday at 7 p.m. against Western Oregon.
