Alaska Anchorage men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne announced Tuesday that junior forward Sjur Berg will miss the 2017-18 season to attend to a personal matter in his native Norway.
“With the blessing of Coach Osborne and the athletic department, I will be taking a leave of absence from school and basketball to help with a family matter,” said Berg, a management major from Nesoddtangen, Norway. “I have every intention of returning to UAA for the 2018-19 school year, play my senior season, and graduate with my degree.”
A 6-7, 220-pound forward, Berg has played in 58 career games, including nine starts, averaging 3.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest, and shooting 52 percent from the field.
“Sjur and I have had many conversations about him possibly having to miss time to deal with a very important family matter,” Osborne said. “When he asked this summer if he could miss this school year, it did not come as a surprise. We support him and look forward to his return in 2018.”
