THIS WEEK: The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will look to their defend their title at the fifth annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush tournament, Oct. 19-20 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, when they take on 2nd-ranked North Dakota on Friday and Merrimack on Saturday.
BRICE ALASKA GOAL RUSH NOTES: The Seawolves will look to claim their second straight BAGR title and third overall when they face ranked North Dakota on Friday and Merrimack on Saturday … the Seawolves are 5-3 all-time in the tournament after posting wins over Nebraska Omaha and Mercyhurst in 2011 … UAA also won in inaugural tournament in 2008.

NOTES: UND has won the last two WCHA series after the teams tied 5-5 in the Kendall Hockey Classic on Oct. 8, 2010 ... the last UAA win against UND was on Oct. 24, 2009 at home (2-1) ... the only neutral-ice meeting between the teams occurred on March 19, 2004 at the WCHA Final Five with UND winning 4-2 ... UND leads the last 15 games, 11-3-1.

NOTES: The teams have met once under head bench boss Dave Shyiak, with the Seawolves winning, 6-2 on Oct. 13, 2006 at the Kendall Hockey Classic ... prior to 2006, the teams met five times with three games at the Classic and two at Merrimack ... the series started in 1984 with an 8-2 win by UAA on Dec. 27 ... the last time UAA lost to MC was on Nov. 22, 1989 (5-2).
KENDALL HOCKEY CLASSIC RECAP: Senior center Matt Bailey had a goal and an assist Oct. 13 as UAA forged a 3-3 tie with Air Force to claim the title of the Kendall Hockey Classic ... the Seawolves (1-0-1) won the championship of their season-opening tournament for the second straight year despite the tying goal by Air Force with just two-tenth of a second left in regulation ... also scoring for UAA were senior forwards Alex Gellert and Jordan Kwas ... on Friday night, sophomore D Derek Docken scored the winning goal and junior Chris Kamal earned the shutout as UAA opened the 2012-13 season with a 2-0 victory over Canisius ... sophomore F Scott Allen had UAA’s first tally of the evening ... Bailey was named the tournament’s MVP, while Gellert and Docken each landed a spot on the all-tournament team.
SEAWOLF BITES: The Seawolves head north after claiming their second straight Kendall Hockey Classic title on Oct. 12-13 … UAA picked up a season-opening 2-0 win against Canisius on Oct. 13, before tying Air Force, 3-3 on Oct. 13 … UAA is now, 22-14-10 overall in the Classic ... UAA now leads the all-time record against Canisius 3-0-1 and against Air Force 13-5-1 … the Seawolves haven’t lost to the Falcons since Feb. 10, 1989, going 7-0-2 since then … UAA is now 8-3-5 in under Shyiak in the Kendall Hockey Classic, with titles in 2006, 2011 and 2012 ... the Seawolves are now 6-0-2 in season-openers under Shyiak ... UAA hasn’t lost a season-opener since 2000 against Michigan State (5-4) ... since then, UAA has gone 9-0-3 in season-openers ... the shutout on Friday was only the second for UAA in a season-opener in 35 years of program history, along with a 4-0 win against Niagara in the 1999 Classic.
PLAYER NOTES: Individually on Oct. 12, sophomore D Derek Docken picked up his second career goal, giving UAA a one-goal lead in the second period ... sophomore F Scott Allen collected UAA’s second tally in the third period – fourth of his career ... junior G Chris Kamal registered his fourth career shutout and first since March 2011 ... picking up his first collegiate tally was F Blake Tatchell with an assist … on Oct. 13, junior F Matt Bailey registered a shorthanded tally, his second career, leading all current Seawolves … also picking up goals were senior F Alex Gellert and senior F Jordan Kwas … Bailey, Gellert and Kwas each tallied a multi-point weekend … picking up his first collegiate assist was D Blake Leask, while junior G Rob Gunderson also earned an assist – his third career.
2011 BRICE ALASKA GOAL RUSH RECAP: The Seawolves collected their second Brice Alaska Goal Rush tournament title over in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks ... both Alaska teams posted a 2-0 record in the Goal Rush, but UAA won the title on goal differential, edging the host plus-7 to plus-6 ... the Seawolves defeated Nebraska Omaha, 3-0 on Oct. 14, before crushing Mercyhurst, 6-2 on Oct. 15 ... seven Seawolves posted a multi-point weekend in Fairbanks, including four points for the-junior F Daniel Naslund (1-3–4) and three for then-junior F Alex Gellert (0-3–3) ... earning the shutout for UAA on Oct. 14 was then-sophomore G Rob Gunderson (23 saves), who also posted an assist ... earning all-tournament team selection were Naslund, Gunderson, then-sophomore D Quinn Sproule and senior F Jade Portwood.
UAA vs. REGINA: In exhibition play, the Seawolves faced the University of Regina Cougars on Oct. 6 at the Harry J. McDonald Center in Eagle River, Alaska … in front of 640 fans, the Seawolves picked up their fifth straight exhibition win with a 3-1 defeat of the Cougars … picking up goals for UAA were seniors Tyler Currier and Alex Gellert and sophomore D Austin Coldwell … Coldwell, from Vancouver, Wash., also assisted on Currier’s tally in the first … forward Blake Tatchell was the lone rookie to record a point, assisting on Gellert’s game-winning goal … UAA was scoreless on seven power-play attempts, and kept Regina scoreless on four … the Seawolves outshot Regina, 30-14.
2012-13 SEASON PREVIEW: Eighth-year head coach Dave Shyiak returns 16 players from last season, including the dependable goaltending combo of juniors Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal … Kamal, who backstopped the Seawolves to the 2011 WCHA Final Five as a rookie, registered a 3.46 GAA and an .877 saves percentage last year … junior F Matt Bailey is UAA’s leading returning scorer with 10-7–17 totals, and will be joined by six seniors as the veteran anchors of the team … senior D Scott Warner was productive on the offensive end with 2-13–15 numbers and senior F Jordan Kwas is a dangerous offensive threat, racking up 14 points last year despite playing in just 21 games … the Seawolves added eight newcomers to their roster, including three Alaskans ... giving Gunderson and Kamal some competition will be 6-3, 180-pound Michael Matyas in the crease.
